After we get our food, Ryder leads me out to the cafeteria. Looking around, I'm surprised by the amount of kids that are here. There's around 70 circular tables, each of them with six chairs, and most of them having kids sitting in them.
Ryder looks around for a moment, clutching his tray tightly to make sure he doesn't drop it, and then heads off towards the opposite side of the room.
"Where are we going?" I ask him curiously.
"We're gonna sit with Elliot and Amy," he says, as if I should know this. I'm not sure who Elliot is, but I recognize the other name.
"Amy..." I mumble. Of course he wants to sit with them; she probably asked him out already and they're probably going on a movie date or something.
He leads me over to one of the tables where Amy sits. Across from her is a guy our age, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. I stare at him for a moment before sitting down.
"Hey," he says, smiling at me.
'He seems friendly enough,' I think to myself. I smile back at him.
Ryder slides into the seat next to him. "How's it going?"
I continue staring at the guy for a second or two more and then sit down on his other side.
"Pretty good. Where were you? You missed Ms. Kremsin screw up on a math problem!" The guy says.
Exchanging a look with me, Ryder hesitates for a minute. I can tell he's coming up with an excuse. "I wasn't feeling well, so Camilla took me to the nurse. But I'm feeling better now."
"Oh. Alright. Don't miss it again!" He says, acting as if he's scolding him.
Ryder grins at him. "Don't worry, I won't."
I glance across the table at Amy. She's in a strange mood; she's usually chattering as fast as she can manage. Instead, she stares silently down at her salad, not looking at anyone.
"I'm Elliot, by the way," the dark haired guy says. He shakes my hand and gives me another smile.
"Camilla," I say, smiling back at him.
He nods, turning his attention to Amy. "Something wrong, Amy?"
She simply shakes her head in response. "No," she says bitterly. She sits up long enough to give Ryder a forlorn look and then goes back to slouching over and staring at her salad.
'I wonder what's up with her,' I think silently to myself.
"Can I talk to you alone?" I hear Ryder whisper to Amy. She stays silent, staring at him, and then nods.
"We'll be back in a minute or two," he says, his voice returning to a normal level.
