I walk out the door of the biology class, I spot Ryder leaning against the wall a few feet away.
"We've got a free period now," he says, seeing me and walking over. I nod, glancing down at my schedule to check. Sure enough, we do.
"What do you want to do?" I ask curiously.
"How about we just go to the library?" He suggests. I nod excitedly; I've always loved libraries. So many books in one place... it's like heaven to me.
Inside my backpack, Strikey shifts, meowing softly. "Stop it, Strikey," I hiss under my breath.
"Huh?" Ryder asks, snapping to attention at the word "Strikey". He looks perplexed.
"I um... nothing..." I mumble. I don't feel like ruining my first friendship by telling him about Strikey. "Let's get to the library."
"Alright. I'm guessing you don't know where that is," he says. I remember now that I don't, actually.
"Yeah," I say, embarrassed that I can't even locate the library. He smiles at me, shifting through his backpack. It appears that he's looking for something.
"Well, that makes two of us," he says, looking up for a moment from his search. "And it appears that I've lost my map."
"I've got one," I say, pulling it out from my pocket. "I lose stuff all the time... I'm surprised that I didn't lose this, too."
He nods in understanding, not looking up from studying the map. His brown eyes are narrowed with concentration. After a few minutes, he sighs and hands the map back to me. "I can't read it," he admits.
"You can't?" I ask, getting a good look at the map myself. "But it's easy to read. See? The library's at the East wing of the school. We're in the South wing."
He simply shrugs, looking as if he's about to cry. "You can lead, then."
'What's his problem?' I ask myself as I lead him to the library.
