The Incriminating Truth

“What? What’s it?” asked Elizabeth nervously.

“You didn’t think I wouldn’t be able to find out what’s going on in your mind, did you?” Swapna asked. “Sorry, I need to feed this data in.”

“Wait, hold on,” Elizabeth. “What do you think I was thinking?”

“I know exactly what you were, and are thinking, Elizabeth,” Swapna replied pointing ahead of the stone building. “See for yourself.”

There were images of her future self attempting to prevent Jason from being born. Of course, Jason knew about all that. She couldn’t be blamed for what her future self was trying to do, though.

Next was a shot of herself, hacking into the super computer that was Swapna, trying to find a way to escape and to stop Jason. It was something she had just been contemplating. How did Swapna figure that out already?

“You can’t hide anything from me, you know,” Swapna smiled as she started typing.

“But this is only a dream! You’re not a real person, and my random thoughts don’t count!” Elizabeth protested.

“I’m sorry, my dear,” Swapna said apologetically. “Everything counts here.”

Elizabeth mused for a second. She was in a sub-conscious dream stage, with the realization that she was in a dream. What was that called? Lucid dreaming! Which meant she could control what happens next!

With a sudden speed and strength which surprised even her, she pounced on Swapna catching her off-balance and knocking her to the ground before she could feed the data.

“What are you doing?” Swapna asked angrily. “You’re trapped inside your dream, and won’t be able to get out without my help!”

“On the contrary,” Elizabeth said with an impish smile. “We’re in my dream. I can make whatever I want to happen.”

“No, that’s not how it works,” Swapna replied, lying on the floor, nursing her sore back.

“Wanna bet?” Elizabeth was now dressed in a long black coat like Trinity in The Matrix. A gun appeared on her right hand. It was her dream after all!

“Now Swapna,” Elizabeth continued pointing her gun at her. “You’re very smart, and I have no intention of harming you, but trust me, if you don’t help me, I will. Although I’d hate to see such a wonderful creation destroyed.”

“You can’t!” Swapna cried.

“I can and I will,” Elizabeth fired a round next to Swapna’s feet, startling her. Damn, that felt good, she thought. I should try this lucid dreaming more often, and try to be more creative next time!

“Alright, alright,” Swapna lifted her hands up. “Now what do you want me to do?”

“Okay, I want to know everything you know. Let’s start with all the information you have about this agency, their plans, the layouts of this building, passcodes and so on. And then you’ll help me stop all this madness.”

Meanwhile, Murali was seated at the adjacent room, monitoring Elizabeth’s condition as well as the CPU activity in Swapna. For some time, things seemed to be progressing as expected. Elizabeth’s brain had been synchronized with Swapna’s. The blue box on the left in his screen showed Elizabeth's brain activity, and the red on the right showed Swapna's.

All of a sudden, he noticed spikes in both the blue and the red boxes, indicating an unusual surge in excitement level in both Elizabeth and Swapna. And then he noticed something stranger.

“Jason, look,” he called Jason hurriedly. “See this data transfer?”

“From Elizabeth’s brain to Swapna of course,” Jason said unsure what Murali was getting at. “What’s wrong with that?”

“No, it’s going in the opposite direction!” Murali said. “Files are being downloaded from Swapna’s hard drive!”

“What?!” Jason cried with a sense of realization. “Stop the synchronization! Wake her up!”
