The ripples of hot white light exploded on contact, a bright flash bursting to life and fading into oblivion after a while. I averted my gaze as it faded, and when I looked back, I was confused. The man was trembling, and his eyes were shifting colours. Red to brown, flickering like a broken machine. He was trembling robotically, and I turned to Anya. "What the hell happened?!"
"Someone didn't perform the spell properly!" she exclaimed. "Quickly! Again!"
I imagined a sheet of white, allowing my mind to clear as a white canvas replaced the space. I channeled my power into my palm, and when I opened my eyes, a larger white sphere was hovering in front of all of us. I hovered there, shining brightly, like a smaller version of the north star. Heat seemed to radiate from it, and the air around it shimmered wildly.
We released the orb of power, and it shot forward, evelopping the man in its warm white glow. He was lifted into the air, beams of gleaming luminosity striking off of every surface as they shot out of his body. The glow faded from his body, and he was placed gently onto the floor. He sat up, his crimson eyes fading back into brown. The man stood with slight troubles, and he shook his head a bit.
Then, he looked straight at us. "Thank you..." he said. "It was horrible... they put me in a cylinder..."
"It's alright," I said soothingly.
"I've been there before. You don't need to explain," replied James. He smiled and stepped forward, placing a hand on the man's shoulder.
I looked him over. "Um... who are you?" I asked.
"My name is... it's... I don't know," he said. "I don't know... who I am..."
"It's alright," I repeated. "You don't need to worry."
"You'll be fine," reasurred Anya. She looked at him with her pretty eyes, and we walked with him, leading him out of the small room we were in.
We sauntered through the Palace, heading for the Queen. She might know what to do with him. I looked down at my arm, which was labelled with the twisting sumbols that represented the Seventh Rank. I smiled. James and I had survived the first task, but we still had a problem.
We hadn't gotten the device.
I'd found out something else while we were there. I'd learned that if used properly, the device could literally tip the Earth off of its axis, causing humanity to tumble endlessly through space, hurtling towards the sun. The only way to be safe from it would be if you were at the New Government Building in one of the safe pods that they'd built.
And so we walked with the man, leading hin stright to the Queen, where she would be able to help him.
