I smiled again as I put the dress down on the bed. This would be absolutely perfect! I ran downstairs and looked at the clock on the stove. 2:16pm. Okay. I have time. I went over to the fridge and took another root beer out. Sipping it, I glanced at the computer, then shook my head. I wouldn't let this spoil my night. Hell, tonight was to get my mind off of this whole crap. I took another sip of root beer and ran back upstairs to my bathroom. I plugged in my blow dryer and looked in the mirror. I must have fallen asleep in my jeans last night because I was wearing the same Bullet for my Valentine t-shirt and my black skinny jeans. I took them off and got in the shower. I was just rinsing my hair when the phone rang. Never fails. I rolled my eyes. I'd let it ring. If it was important, and they called again. If they called more than twice, it would definitely be Briar. Sure enough, just as I was getting out of the shower, the phone rang for the third time. I put on a housecoat and went into my room to grab the extension. I looked at the caller ID to make sure. BREE CALLING. Yup. That would be Briar. I picked it up.
"You just got out of the shower, didn't you?"
"I figured you'd be getting ready..." she let it trail off, and I could hear her smile on the other end.
"I'm so excited!" I squealed.
"What are you going to wear?" she asked.
"The dress." I didn't even have to tell her which one.
"Well, I'm almost there. The door's open right?"
"Yup. Just come right in. I'll be upstairs." I answered.
"Kay! See you in a sec.." She disconnected the line.
I went back into my bathroom and started blowdrying my hair.
Then I paused. I can't work without music. I Leaned into my room and grabbed the remote that was on my bed. I flipped through a couple songs.
Then I found the perfect one.
The opening chords of "For the Nights I can't Remember" by Hedley started playing. I smiled again as I remembered how Lucas and I had slow danced to this for a school play, three years ago, in grade eight. I remembered looking into his beautiful brown eyes and wishing, wishing as hard as I could, that this was a real slow dance. I chuckled as I also remembered that that had been the reason I couldn't look him in the eyes. The horrible feeling that he would never actually dance with me like that...that he would would never love me....
I shook the feeling away. Screw the unhappiness of the world, tonight was going to be amazing. The best night of my life. I started singing along as loud as I could. After all, no one could hear me.
"And I, do, wanna love you..
if you see me running back
and I, do, wanna try...
Because if fallin' for you boy is crazy,
then I'm going out of my mind,
so hold back you tears this time...."
"You know, it's really not fair that you can cry while you're singing and still sound amazing."
I whipped around to find Briar. I must have been singing so loud that I didn't hear her come in. I bowed.
"Why, thank you." I said mockingly.
She laughed. "Hurry up girl! It's 3:45. You have not even three hours to look amazing! Not that you don't already do," she added hastily.
"Here." She walked over to me and started brushing my hair. She started singing. A little off key, but nice.
"And what if I never said to you I was dynamite..
and what if I never said to I'm afraid to cry,
and what if I never let you down
and said I'm sorry for the nights I can't remember,"
I joined in with the harmonies.
"What if I never said to you I would try...yeah...."
She picked up the flat iron and started straightening my hair.
I kept singing softly as she brushed and straightened.
"And I, do, want to love you...
see me running back and I,
do, want to try,
because if fallin for you boy is crazy,
then I´m going out of my mind,
so hold back your tears, this time...."
"Ugh, I love that song." she said.
"Me too,¨I said. "Always have."
She looked at me and we smiled as we said unanimously: "Always will!"
She put down the flat iron as the song ended. "I´ve got a great song!¨She went into my room and changed the stereo from CD mode to the docking station. She put her iPod down and pressed play. "Beside You" by Marianas Trench came on right away and I grinned and made a heart with my hands.
"Aww, love you too." said Briar.
I picked up my makeup bag and sifted through it. Briar continued to do my hair as I sorted through my assortment of lipsticks, mascaras, blushes and concealers. Finally, I gave up and dumped the contents of the little bag that was (not suprisingly) packed to the seams. I picked through what seemed like an entire beauty store, all the while wondering how on earth I managed to acquire all this makeup, until I found what I had been searching for.
"Aha!" I exclaimed. Briar rolled her eyes.
¨You´d think you had struck oil or something. Now stand as still as possible, please. Your hairstylist can´t work if you´re bouncing around like a maniac!" She joked.
"Yes, my oh-so-professional hairstylist. How much do I pay for your masterpiece?" I said.
"Just a hug and I´ll be on my way."
I blew a kiss at her. "Anytime. And FYI, I struck eyeliner. That´s just as precious!" I turned my attention to trying to stand still while applying eyeliner. I put it on and then leaned back to check it.
Briar sighed dramatically. "Your eyeliner looks fine. Hold still! I´m almost done." I glanced at the clock. 5:02. Okay. Calm down. You have time!
Briar finished a piece in the back then turned me around, humming to Three Days Grace. "Hmmm," she said, appraising my hairdo. Then she smiled and brushed a strand of her own hair out of her face. "You´re so beautiful.. Lucas is going to positively drool when he gets here."
I blushed. "Thanks." I finished putting on makeup while Briar went downstairs to get a snack. She brought up a bowl of chips and two root beers. "I swear," I said as I opened the can. "This is the fourth root beer I´ve had today."
We snacked on the chips as we fooled around with Briar´s hair, trying to decide how to do it. She showed me the dress she was going to wear when her and Tyler met Lucas and I for dinner. It was a navy blue, knee-length dress with a black sash around the waist.
I squealed as she brought out the black heels she was planning on wearing. "Those are the exact same ones I´m wearing!" She stared at me in disbelief. "But..I won these from a contest in New York. People from all over the world had called in, and the lady said that there were only two pairs to be won!"
I nodded. "I know! This is crazy that we both got the only ones available to the public! They´re the ones from the LeChiqueBoutique collection, right? The ones worth $500?" She giggled. "The exact same!" We decided that it was fate, and that we were destined to wear them tonight.
"So," I said, after we had stopped freaking out over our shoes."What are you and Tyler going to do until you guys come meet us for dinner?"
She shook her head. "He won´t tell me. You see, Lucas and I had had tonight for you two planned for awhile, and we decided that Tyler and I would join you for dinner, but apparently, Lucas and Tyler were also planning something for Tyler and I too!"
She wrung her hands. "Ugh! I can´t stand the suspense!"
I laughed. "You and me both!" Then I looked at the clock and jumped up.
"Augh! It´s 5:57 and we´re still not ready!" I shrieked.
She got up too. "And they´re coming at 6:15!"
We giggled nervously. Then we ran to the bathroom like the devil was on our heels.
I put on my lipstick and touched up my eyeliner. I took a quick glance at my hair and hugged Briar. "My hair looks amazing! Thanks!" It was wavy, not too straight, but not my usual curls. It looked great. I ran into my bed room and put on my dress, staring at the clock the whole time...6:13... I put on the strappy black heels and ran (as fast as I could with the heels on) downstairs and looked in the full length mirror. Briar came down equally as fast and stood next to me. We looked like we were going to a ball...a knock on the door made us jump.
I opened the door to find Tyler. He looked at me. "You look nice." I blushed. "Thanks Ty." Well. This was a little awkward. Tyler used to like me in grade eight. I remembered when he asked me to grad. I had felt horrible, but I said no. I liked Lucas. Feeling flustered, I pushed Briar forwards. "See you later Bree!" She blew a kiss over her shoulder. They got into Tyler´s car and drove down the street. I closed the door and looked at the clock again. 6:14...I went upstairs and turned off the stereo, which was now playing "Miss Independent" by Ne-Yo. The doorbell rang and I almost tripped down the stairs trying to get down as fast as possible.
I opened the door to see Lucas, looking amazingly handsome in his black and white suit.
"You look beautiful. As always." He smiled my favorite little smile of his, and handed me a single red rose. I gasped. "How did you...?" He smiled again.
"Remember in grade 9, when you left for that arts school, and I asked you what kind of flower you would want as a goodbye present? You told me that you always wanted someone to give you a single red rose." Tears pooled in my eyes. He remembered?
"Thank you." I took the rose and inhaled its sweet fragrance.
He offered his hand and I took it. We walked out the door and he locked it for me. He handed me the key and we stepped out onto the driveway. I gasped. Again. A shiny black corvette sat there. He chuckled.
"Briar let slip that this was your dream car, and it just so happened that one of my friends owned one. He´s letting me borrow it for the night."
He looked at me. "You like it? It is your dream car right?" He frowned. "I-" I cut him off. "Shh."
I squealed in happiness. I hugged him and raced towards the car. I stopped just short of the door in awe. "This is so....cool!" He relaxed. "Thank god." He walked over and opened the door for me. I slid in and marveled at the sheer beauty of the car. He got in and started the engine. I laughed in amazement as the expensive car roared to life. We sped down the street. The sun was already beginning to set, and he reached over and flipped a switch. These multicolored lights came on, and they flashed to the beat of the radio, that came on to the song "Shiver" by Shawn Desman. Lucas started to sing along. He had an amazing voice. He rolled down the windows, and a warm breeze blew through our hair.
"I want you to know,
that every time you´re close I,
He turned and smiled at me. "Join in?" I smiled at him.
"I gotta catch my breath,
so caught up that I forget,
because every time you´re close I,
shiver, shiver, shiver...."
He smiled at me, and I shivered. I laughed quietly.
"What?" he asked. "I shivered." He laughed. "Me too. You have an amazing voice, Jordyn." I blushed. "Thanks. We should sing together sometime," I joked.
He laughed and started singing again. I sang with him, weaving a complicated harmony to the melody.
"It´s like seeing the sun,
for the very first time,
it gets me every time..."
He looked at me and smiled widely. "Beautiful."
I changed the subject. "So where are we going? It´s been driving me crazy all day!" He shook his head, grinning. "I´m only going to tell you that we´re meeting Tyler and Bree for dinner at 9."
He sped up, and we raced along the road for a while, talking about our families, occasionally singing along to the radio. After about half an hour, we stopped and pulled into a crowded parking lot. He closed the door behind me, and we walked into the theater-like building.
Music hit me right away. This was a concert! I recognized the faces on stage right away. I turned to Lucas. "You got us tickets to a Marianas Trench concert?!?"
He grinned. "Not just tickets. VIP tickets."
We walked out at 8:30, deciding not to meet the band. Lucas´ cousin knew Matt Webb, the guitarist, so he said we could meet them another time. I hugged Lucas for the fifty millionth time. "Thank you so much! That was so much fun!" We had sung the lines to every song, and when they played "Beside You", he had wrapped his arms around me and sung the words in my ear.
We got into the car, and drove to a fancy Italian restaurant that I couldn´t pronounce the name of. We met Briar and Tyler in the parking lot.
She hugged me. "Wasn´t the concert amazing? We were in the other VIP booth. We decided to leave you guys alone."
I laughed. "It was the most...just..the MOST. Period. There just isn´t a word to describe it."
She squealed. "I know!" We all walked into the restaurant. Our table was reserved in the back, and the guy who was our waiter looked about our age. He eyed Briar and I, and I pretended not to notice as he turned to Tyler and Lucas and gave them a thumbs up, winking. They laughed. Briar rolled her eyes.
"So what will you all be having tonight?" The guy asked.
