The Note

This is top secret. You WILL answer. You will not find out who this is or why this happens to you. Answer or else. We will find you. Destroy this or we will destroy you.

With shaking hands, I dropped the mouse and stood up. What the heck? I backed away from the computer and leaned against the kitchen counter for support. I sank to the floor, scared to the point where I was about to collapse.

When I got my voice back, I explained to Briar what had just happened, trying to keep my voice from shaking.

"Woah." She paused, thinking something over, and then, her voice determined, said: "That's it. Shopping is cancelled. I'm coming over."

She hung up, and I walked over to the kitchen to get a drink from the fridge. Next to it on the table was a piece of paper. A note. My breath caught in my throat, but looking closer, I recognized the handwriting of my mother.

Good Morning Darling,

Your father and I had to go away for a couple days on a short notice business trip. It pays well, and I didn't want to wake you up. We left at around 3:30 this morning so I figured you wouldn't be too thrilled if I woke you up to tell you. Why don't you invite Briar over or something? It's March Break for you girls right? I hope you don't miss us too much. =) Love, Mom and Dad.

P.S.  I left some money for food and stuff on top of your dresser. Go buy yourself lunch or something.

P.P.S. There's a doughnut for you in the fridge <3

Oh. That explained why they weren't here. I opened the fridge, and sure enough, right behind where the orange juice was, was a delicious boston cream doughnut.

Way to go Mom!

I put the orange juice back and bit into my doughnut, thinking back to the note, the one that didn't seem so harmless as my mothers. But the more I thought about it, the more terrified I got.

Then the door opened, and I screamed.

"My god, Jordyn! What's wrong?!?" Briar ran over to me and tugged on my hands, which were covering my mouth. I rocked back and forth, tears starting to stream down my cheeks. She shook me as if to shake it out of me. "JORDYN! Talk to me!" She was fighting back frightened tears. "What happened?" I gulped and took a shaking breath. I lifted my finger and pointed to the screen, where I had forgotten to close the document. She let go of me and walked over to the computer. She read the document and the turned to me. "So you didn't write this?" I shook my head. "I swear. And I have no idea who did, and Briar, I'm so scared." I closed my eyes. I hated not knowing things. Being in the dark, being confused.

She pulled out her cellphone. I saw her speed dial a number and hold the phone to her ear. She spoke in hushed tones and then nodded. "Yes. I think you should come. See you soon." She closed the phone and turned to me. "Luke is coming. He's bringing Tyler." I sniffed and shakily got up, wiping my eyes. She put her hands on my shoulder. "You'll be fine. He'll be here soon, and it'll all be okay. I'm sure that no one actually plans on hurting you."

"I hope not..." I whispered.

We sat on the couch until they got there. I had laid my head down and I must of nodded off because the next thing I knew, Lucas had sat down next to me and was shaking me gently with an anxious look on his face. "Jordyn? Jordyn, honey, are you alright?" I saw him turn to Briar. "How long has she been like this?" She wrung her hands, and I could see that tears of horror filled her eyes. "Since you called. She just laid down and muttered to herself. She just kept repeating the words "Answer or else" over and over and then when you pulled up to the house, she screamed, and then fell into that weird trance..." she trailed off. Tyler put his arm around her, and Luke looked back at me. I opened my eyes fully and sat up. Tears streamed down my face. "This is all happening so fast, and all in the same day....and to me. Why me?" I looked up into his electric blue eyes. He shook his head and smoothed my hair. "I don't know. But I'm going to find out." He put his hands on either side of my face. "Are you alright?" he asked, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. I nodded and slipped out of his arms. I stood up and walked over to the fridge. I grabbed an A&W Root Beer, sat down on the kitchen counter, and looked out the window. "I don't understand. First the telepathic stuff, then the note....what next?" I turned back to my friends. "Does everything just get worse? Is someone trying to get me? What did I do? Did I see something I wasn't supposed to? What if it's just some pysco mass- murderer? What if--"

"Stop." Lucas walked over to be and pulled me off the counter. "Nothing is going to happen to you," he said fiercely. "I would never let it. We're going to figure this out, Jordyn. I promise."

Briar paced around my kitchen, thinking. "My mother is going on a cruise with her new boyfriend anyways, so she won't care if I stay here for the next couple days." She looked back at me. "Will you be okay if I go to get my stuff?" I nodded. She shared a look with Lucas. He nodded ever so slightly, and they both grinned. "It might do her good. Calm her down a little." She laughed and walked to the door, hugging me quickly. "I'll be back later," she said. Tyler followed her. "I'll come with you." she said. They drove down the street, and I watched them until Briar's red convertible turned the corner.

I turned to Luke. "What was she talking about?" I asked him. He chuckled. "It's something her and I have been planning for a while. They'll meet us for dinner tonight. I'll pick you up at 6:15 sharp." He smiled that smile, the one that only he could do, that made me want to melt into his arms. I liked him so much, and he knew it. He had just broken up with his girlfriend, and, as Briar liked to put it, he was "up for grabs" . He hugged me, jolting me out of my daze. "See you then. Dress like you're going to a fancy restaurant, okay?" I must of look pretty confused, because he hugged me again. "That's my hint. I'll see you soon." He winked and stepped outside. I closed the door behind him, still a little confused, but happily so. Did he just ask me out? I ran upstairs, meeting my cat halfway. I kissed the top of her head. "Ooh, Cleo, I'm so excited!"

I ran into my room and threw open the doors to my closet. I looked through the dresses hanging there. I giggled as I remembered all the memories with all the different dresses. My eighth grade graduation dress, the dress I wore to the hands froze on a short white dress, with a black belt and ruffled skirt. I smiled as I remembered the day I had picked it out.

Lucas, Briar and I had gone to the mall for an afternoon last year. We were going to pick out a dress for me to wear at Lucas' aunts wedding, and Briar tagged along because she couldn't bear to pass up a trip to the mall. Briar went to go look for shoes in a different store and Lucas, being the amazing guy he is, let me drag him into about five different dress stores. After I had tried on about fifty million dresses, he came up to me with the dress. I remember the look on his face when I came out of the change rooms wearing it. "You look beautiful." he had said, and I knew that that was the dress.

Now, with the dress in my hands, I had a feeling that this was the perfect dress for tonight.

The End
