The Paranormal Research And Development Agency, or PRADA, was a small level government agency set up in the 1960s to investigate into small occurrences of a kind which couldn't be explained by conventional science. PRADA kept a low profile, investigating small paranormal events and sightings, until they encountered Dark Energy, an eclectic mix of ectoplasmic forces and mind-numbing electrical phenomena. With careful experimentation, they found that they could control this Dark Energy by implanti
The left door of the pristine white room opened, creaking murderously, while Kara battered away at the one on the right. The steel door was however, too strong, unyielding to the screams of those who had the misfortune of being trapped behind it. On one side of this door, behind the glass screen, Matt Freeson, slowly smoked his cigarette. Kara couldn’t see past the screen; it was a one-way mirror. But Matt could see exactly what was happening inside the room.
The left door finally opened fully, and the room was instantaneously filled with what looked like dense black smoke. But Matt knew it for what it was. Matt couldn’t see anything further than the glass screen. He came closer to the screen, hoping for something. In the dark, the screen itself was no better than a mirror, and Matt could see every strained line on his own face, the anger seething in his eyes, the crows’ feet under his eyes betraying an age far beyond that what he actually held. The darkness did not clear, and Matt swore a few times under his breath. The seconds ticked by. A few more, and this trial too would be a failure.
Matt was on the verge of crushing his cigar, when the darkness slowly began to dissipate. Wisps and curls of dark smoke trailed away. Matt could see them all slowly leading towards Kara. The room regained its immaculate whiteness, the only incongruity being the woman huddled in a fetal position by the metal door. Matt could now see her, every twitch of her limbs, involuntary shudders that passed through her body. He saw her eyes, and they were stone-cold, like a dead fish. Or worse.
Matt readjusted his round prim glasses on his hawk-like nose, while the computer beeped,
“Critical Spirit Mass achieved.”
Any less than that, and Kara would have suffered from insanity, psychosis or amnesia. Any more than that would have killed her. But Matt was trying not to think about that. Critical Spirit Mass had been achieved. Kara had become the first Spirit Soldier, the first successful trial in Project Rebirth.
Matt asked, “Dr. Shimoto, can we have a test run on her now?”
“Sure, just let me calibrate the controller.”
The diminutive Asian scientist who had been overseeing the trial along with Matt started to fiddle with what looked like a small hand-held keyboard. Dr. Yigai Shimoto had been working on Project Rebirth with Matt since its inception.
“Alright, let’s see what happens now.”
Like a puppet, Kara stood up. Dr. Shimoto played around with the controls a little more, and Kara began to walk, wooden at first, and as the doctor began to get the hang of it, she walked with a more natural gait.
Matt Freeson smiled at Dr. Shimoto. The expression on Shimoto’s face was halfway between a child looking like he was playing with a new toy, and a mad scientist engaged in a new discovery. Eventually, Matt left the room.

PRADA kept a low profile, investigating small paranormal events and sightings, until they encountered Dark Energy, an eclectic mix of ectoplasmic forces and mind-numbing electrical phenomena. With careful experimentation, they found that they could control this Dark Energy by implanting gaseous electrodes in it. It wasn’t long before they started experimenting with it on humans.
A momentous discovery was made. It was learnt that it could be used to control people.
The Spirit Soldiers, the final outcome of Project Rebirth, became PRADA’s workforce. PRADA itself became more powerful and more nebulous, disappearing into the shadows. Soon, PRADA was up there with all those other paranormal occurrences, among things that went bump in the night. And Matt Freeson, project leader for Project Rebirth, soon rose to head PRADA.
