James Whithers

I walked through the door. It was a typical high school, crazy teenagers riding their skateboards down the hallway, some people making out in the corner, and then there are the nerds who just sit and chew on their finger nails.

It reminded me of my high school, when I was their age. It reminded me of that one relationship. With Tracie. She was the girl of my dreams. She was the one person who could see through people even better than I could. We went to college together, I took law enforcement, and she took forensics. I asked her to marry me after college. She said yes. We planned our wedding to happen within the next few months. I wasn't that lucky.  Tracie, she's dead now. I never really did solve that case. She was murdered, horribly. She was cut across the stomach, then stabbed repeatedly. But she didn't die there. She died by bleeding to death. And while she was still alive, all of her limbs were cut off slowly. I was heart broken, and I never really recovered.

All I knew was that the person who killed her, killed her, because of me. I don't know who it was, but it was someone I knew. That's why I refused to have friends. I didn't trust anyone ever again...

I walked over to one of the kids and tapped on their shoulder, "You know Chace?"

"Uhh...yeah. I do. Why?"

"What's your name kid?"

"Chace is dead Josh."

Josh stared at me for a second, almost looking as though he didn't believe me.

"I wouldn't lie Josh."

Josh slowly backed up against the locker, "Oh...crap."

I went back to the office, I couldn't stand watching the whole school fall apart when the principal announced Chace's death over the intercom. Everyone flipped. Chace was important to the school I guess.

I felt more empathetic than I ever had in a case before...

I knew this was going to turn out to be a very tough case, and that's what bothered me most...

The End
