Chapter One - Part SevenMature

"Fuck!" I shouted to no one in particular. This isn't good. I can't have Laus poking about in my business. Kai practically burst into the room, ready for action. I almost laughed.

"What happened?"

I smirked. "Nothing dire. Just an annoying conversation with an uppity King."

"Hmph King my ass. What did he want?"

I stood, "Nothing much, just checking to see how that job was going. You know, the Elf thing."

Kai nodded, "What do you want to do about it? We can't find anything through our normal sources."

I nodded with a sigh, "I know. I'll think of something. For now though, we're going on a Field Trip, come on."

Kai followed me out of the door quite happily, and climbed in the passenger seat of my car, "Any chance you're going to tell me where we're going?"

I smirked, "Local College. It seems to be where the whole mess in town started. Let's ask around."

*******

When we pulled up, the place was pretty much dead, everyone in classes. I slapped the steering wheel with frustration. I should have thought of that. I wasn't a cop. I couldn't just walk in there, flash a badge and get my own way. I had to do things the hard way. I checked my watch. Almost half twelve. They would be coming out for lunch soon, surely.

True to my thoughts, a stream of teenagers erupted from the College like a herd of cattle at just gone half twelve. I smiled, stepping out of the car. "Come on."

Kai climbed out with an odd smile, "What exactly do you plan on doing now?"

I shrugged, "I'll improvise."

I jogged up to a group of them. They all looked a little dodgy. Like the sort of kids you might think would be smoking a joint behind the bike shed. "Hey, guys!" They all turned to stare at me, one or two of them with a panicked expression.

I put up my hands. "Relax, I'm not a cop. I just wanna talk."

They all relaxed visibly. One shot me a leery grin. "What can we do for you, sexy lady?" The others sniggered.

I laughed, "Has that line ever worked?"

Cue more laughing from the cronies. His face turned a lovely shade of crimson. "What do you want?" This was quieter, more sullen.

"Just wanted to talk about that thing that happened last week." I was fishing in the dark with this one. I didn't actually know what had happened. Maddox's info had simply said 'DISTURBANCE AT TENESSON COLLEGE' and nothing else.

One's eyes lit up and he couldn't help but talk. "You mean when Jodi went crazy, right?"

I wasn't sure whether this guy was on the right track, but what other 'crazy shit' could happen in one school in a week? "Yeah, that."

One of them nudged the one who had spoken. "Shut up." He stepped forward, brushing his floppy brown fringe from his eyes. There was a sly look on his face. "You wanna know what happened? It'll cost you." I smirked. Smart, ish.

"Well, I'm sure I could just go ask someone else."

The boy considered my words, "You could, but I have a feeling you can't just ask the College, huh?"

I nodded, conceding his point, "I could ask other students though."

Kai shot me an impatient look, murmuring into my earpiece, "Just give them a tenner or something. You're wasting time."

I scowled at him. "I'm your boss, not the other way around." I turned back to the boy. "I give you a tenner, you tell me everything you know." The boy nodded eagerly. "Come with me, we can talk about it over coffee or something." He nodded and started to follow, his friends trailing behind him. "Your friends won't be needed."

He sighed, ushering them all away. Finally. I could actually start working. I needed to. It felt strange to have not done a job for two days.

The End
