We raced through the building; Camilla shouting the directions to Alyssa’s room at me. When we came to the door, I stopped and turned to the others.
“Let me go in alone first. If we all go at once it might upset her”.
“Okay” they said, and then both crossed their arms and stared at me. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. There was no answer. I pushed it open slightly. Alyssa was sitting on the bed in the dark. I entered the room and shut the door behind me, and then quietly made my way over to her. I sat down next to her and placed a hand on her back.
“Alyssa?” She turned to me.
“Logan?” She hugged me; wrapping her arms around my neck and burying her head in my chest.
“Alyssa what is it?”
“Your ex is here. That’s not good”.
“I know it’s not… but why does it affect you?”
“Because it affects you”. She was crying. “And what if she tries to attack me because I kissed you? What if she tries to hurt me? What if you fall back in love with her?”
“None of that will happen!” I said, hugging her tightly. “I won’t let her hurt you, and you can trust me when I say I won’t ever be talking to her, or falling in love with her, ever again”.
She leaned back, a glint in her eyes. “Let’s get out of here Logan. You and me. Let’s break out and run”. She jumped up and went to her dresser. She grabbed an armful of her clothes and tried to stuff them in a bag. “Logan grab that” she pointed to a notebook on her desk, and then she went back to the dresser and grabbed another handful of clothes. She stuffed them into the bag too and then looked at me; a wicked grin on her face. In a matter of seconds she was sitting beside me again; her lips locked against mine. Then she was standing again, pacing. "Let’s go to Australia. Let’s just run away together. MY MAKEUP!” she ran into the bathroom and slammed the door behind her. I stared after her for a moment, and then heard the lock on the door click. The door to the room opened and Camilla and Mia stuck their heads around the door.
“Can we come in?” Mia asked.
“I think she’s having a manic episode” I said. “She’s locked herself in the bathroom”.
“Oh no” Camilla said. She ran over and banged on the door. “Alyssa! Let us in!”
“What is it?” I asked.
“She always has a depressive episode straight after a manic episode”.
We heard glass shattering. I joined Camilla in banging on the door, as did Mia.
“Alyssa! Let me in!” I yelled.
“We just want to help” Mia said. We listened for a reply, and were greeted with the sounds of sobbing, followed by running water.
“Alyssa! Stop!” Camilla shouted.
“I’m breaking it in” I said. They stepped back. I kicked the door at the lock and it burst inward. We rushed in. Alyssa was standing beneath her shower; water teaming down over her. She was sobbing, and she held a jagged piece of glass from her shattered mirror in one hand. Blood dripped from it, and also from the wound on her left wrist.
“ALYSSA!” Camilla yelled. She took a step toward Alyssa but stopped when she cried out.
“Don’t come any closer” she said, raising the glass to her neck. A droplet of blood appeared where the point rested against her flesh. I motioned for Camilla and Mia to take a step back, and then turned to Alyssa. I held my hands up in a peaceful gesture.
“Alyssa, give me the glass. Come here to me” I said.
“It’s not worth living Logan” she said, shivering. “I may as well just end it here. Nothing ever works out. Love kills”.
“Alyssa, don’t say that. It is worth living. And the things that matter do work out, look at us”. I took a step closer. “We thought we wouldn’t see each other again. But here we are”.
“Something is going to happen. You won’t want me anymore”.
“I will always want you Alyssa. Nothing is going to come between us”.
“I’m going to get hurt. The last time I loved someone it ended in hurt”.
“This time it won’t. You know I won’t do that to you. Alyssa. Look at me”. Her eyes found mine. They were filled with terror. She was shaking all over. “Alyssa, I love you”.
She sobbed again. “I love you too Logan”. She took a step forward into my arms and I hugged her tight, her head against my chest, my arms wrapping around her and holding her. Her knees became weak and we slid down to the ground; both of us beneath the stream of her shower now. I eased the glass from her hand and passed it to Camilla. Alyssa leaned into me and buried her face against me, sobbing again. I held her, resting my head on top of hers. “I will never let you go” I said. I kissed the top of her head and looked at the red liquid swirling down the drain. My eyes found the wound on her wrist. It didn’t appear too deep.
“I love you Logan”. Her voice was muffled in my clothing.
“I love you Alyssa”. She leaned her head back and I kissed her lightly on the lips. She rested her head on my shoulder again and closed her eyes. Her breathing eased down and she fell into a slumber. I gently picked her up and carried her from the shower, into her room and laid her on the bed. She did not stir. I pulled over a stool and took her hand in mine, and simply watched her sleep.
