That was the day she walked back into my life. She had her hair down and her fringe fell across her face; obscuring one of her eyes. A Biffy Clyro hoodie protected her from the cold and she wore a pair of grey jeans.
“When did you get back?” I asked. She glanced up at me, shy smile still in place.
“Ten days ago”.
“Right after they put me in isolation”. She nodded. I walked over and sat on the bench. She walked over and sat on the other edge.
“Camilla’s been filling me in on the goings on since I was gone. I hear you two are best friends now?”
“Yeah” I laughed. I didn’t say anything; I had no idea how much Camilla had told her. “What other rumours about me has she been spreading?”
“Just that you kicked the shit out of Damien… and out of your former best friend Ian”.
“Yeah that happened” I said, looking at the ground.
“I can’t believe Ian tried to come visit. Him of all people”. She paused for a moment. “It must suck having Kate in here”.
“You have no idea”. I looked up at her again. “Why are you back?”
“Aren’t you glad to see me?” she asked, then looked away.
“Of course I am… but not in here. Why did you have to come back?”
She looked into my eyes. “I had a manic episode…. A bad one”.
“Because of your bipolar disorder?”
She nodded. “They were getting better. That’s why they let me leave; I hadn’t had an episode of mania or depression in a few weeks. But I had a really bad manic episode twice, and three episodes of severe depression. So I had to come back. The episodes have been nearly daily since then”.
“Back to this hell”.
“Back to this hell” she agreed.
“I’m sorry” I said.
“It’s okay”, she looked off into the distance again. “Most of my friends are in here anyway so it’s not so bad”. Her hand was outstretched on the bench; about halfway between us. She continued to stare into the distance. “Camilla says you’ve not stopped talking about me since the night before I left”. I looked at her; but she continued her stare.
“You made a big impact on me” I said. I slid my hand across and took hers, interlocking my fingers with hers. She looked back into my eyes.
“You made a big impact on me too”. She squeezed my hand tighter in hers and slid a little closer.
“Camilla seems to think you and I are perfect for one another” I said. I slid a little closer. It all seemed so familiar; as if nothing had passed since that first night we shared up on the roof.
“Does she now?” she asked.
“Indeed she does” I said. We both slid a little closer.
“I think I like you Logan” she said.
“I think I like you too” I said.
“I haven’t stopped thinking about you since we kissed”.
“Really?” I asked. She nodded, biting her lip.
“I’m not good at this kind of thing” she said. “But I like you”.
“I’m no good at it either”.
“I… Can we take things slowly? I… I don’t know how much I can handle”.
“Of course we can” I said. “Whatever you want Alyssa”.
“I… I really want to kiss you right now”.
I brushed her fringe back from her face and tucked it behind her ear. I titled her head up and cupped her cheek in my hand. “What if I kiss you first?” I leaned in and pressed my lips against hers. I moved my hands to the small of her back and held her as she slid her arms around my neck and kissed me back. Time became irrelevant. I lost myself in the kiss; lost myself in the moment. Everything about it felt right.
