Gabriel put his hand out to try and turn the light off as it shone through his eyelids, he had a pounding headache. ‘It must have been a good night, last night’ he thought he couldn’t find the switch for his lamp, he sat up wishing quickly that he hadn’t.
His ribs creaked in protest and his left arm swung uselessly then his mind came back to the present remembering his short trial and sentence, he looked around, staying in his seated position on the floor, sand swirled all around him, he couldn’t see anything nearby but rocks sand and dirt. ’Great’ he thought, he stood up carefully limping slightly.
He moved walking slowly, hoping to find something, this wasn’t Earth by the looks of it, then again he had only ever seen pictures of the planet under Auras rule, princes didn’t go to earth, that was the workers in the cities job, he thought as he carried on limping towards somewhere that he didn’t know, he thought it could be the Underworld then he dismissed the thought, it wasn’t hot enough, and there were no daemons near him, there was no one near him as a matter of fact.
Suddenly the floor dropped away beneath him, he had been so busy thinking about where he was and making one leg move in front of the other he hadn’t looked where he was going, water forced its way into his mouth and nose his mind panicked for a moment the he forced himself to relax knowing that his body would float to the surface, his head broke the water and he looked around again.
He had landed in a crystal clear lake, he saw sand in the distance but not the dirty sand of the wasteland he had just left this was yellow and clean. Beyond that he saw grass and trees, he smiled painfully, and using his good right arm he slowly swam towards the shore. Pulling his exhausted and aching limbs out of the water he turned onto his back and lay on the sand, the sun high over him, he could feel the heat drying his clothes and hair out slowly .
He opened his eyes and saw that the sun was setting in the distance, he braced himself before he moved he was stupid to have fallen asleep, his limbs were stiff and painful he sat up slowly and pulled a damp, slowly disintegrating card box from his breast pocket he tipped it upside down and two cigarettes fell out. He sniffed slightly as he saw the state that they were on the water had made the paper go a light brown colour and the filters were sopping wet, he sighed and tucked one behind each ear,
‘Beggars cant be choosers’ he thought, he stood up careful of his injuries and limped slowly across the sand. He stepped onto the grass and walked a little way before sitting down under the shade of a low tree its leaves spread wide above his head, and he shut his eyes again.
