Rosie sat in her swivel-chair, staring at the board. Her eyes darted from picture to picture as she tried to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Nothing seemed to make sense. She couldn't see the links.
"So Beverly, Christina and Susanna were all killed there," she pointed to a map of the fairground. "On and around the Helter Skelter. Important?"
Lollie nodded out of the corner of her eye. The rest of her team looked confused.
"Well it looks to me like a crime of passion." It was DI Cunningham, one of her least favourite people.
"Go on then. Explain it out."
"Killer gets rejected by one of the girls, probably the one who went down the slide - what was her name?"
"Why do you say that?"
"She was stabbed. Act of love."
"Not sure but go on." Rosie didn't try to veil her disapproval.
"Then the others were just in the way. He threw that one girl out of the way as he was trying to get to Christina and then."
"Strangled Susanna. I thought that was the lover's preferred method no?"
Rosie smiled, letting her smugness show.
"And if you turn it round so that he wanted Susanna, then it still doesn't look terribly good. It just makes little sense. Sorry Cunningham."
"So what do you think, boss?"
She looked to Lollie who walked over to the board, telling her to repeat what she says and do what she does.
"All three girls were the victim of the same man, a man who wanted to kill all of them. None of them were 'in the wrong place at the wrong time'. That man thought that they all deserved to die for one reason or another. So I'm going back to the crime scene. To look for clues."
The ghost walked out of the room, passing through the door. Rosie took a second to realise that she needed to open the door and so did so in the nick of time.
"You lot do what you do best yeah?" she yelled back to them, before shutting the door behind them.
She followed Lollie down the stairs, jumping into her car.
"There's something you need to know, Lollie."
"Tell me as you drive?"
"I was the first person on the scene."
"I don't see what that's got to do with anything."
"I received an invite. The same invite that they found with each of the girls."
"So I was supposed to be the fourth victim."
