Chapter XLVII

‘Are you sure you know the way?’

Carla jumped slightly, turning to find Gideon behind her, watching her say goodbye to Randy and Maria.

‘Oh,’ she said with a smile. ‘I’m sure I’ll manage!’

‘Even so... I don’t like the idea of sending you off by yourself. There’s outlaws out there... besides us.’

Carla widened her eyes in mock terror. ‘Worse than you? Surely not!’

Gideon laughed. ‘Oh, you’ll find we’re not by any means the worst things out there. Look... I’m going to Yild anyway, and Hathering is just beyond that - it wouldn’t be much of a detour if I took you there myself.’

Carla blushed furiously. ‘Are you sure? I mean, you’ve got all your work to do and everything...’

Gideon grinned. ‘Since when do you think that’s ever stopped me?’

‘Well, in that case, thank you very much. And it would be even better if you could saddle my horse for me - I’m afraid I’m only a tailor’s daughter, and not much when it comes to animals.’

‘Of course! Look, I’ll even show you how.’
