The Idea of Loss

Recommend

Last night could easily fall into the top ten of 'Worst Nights of My Life'.

One of my best friends (We'll call her 'Rachel) and I were walking after play practice.  It had been a dance reheaersal, so the cool air felt good.  We were walking to our church which was seated diagonally across from the high school.  Our worship band had practice tonight.

We walked and I noticed that there were many cars in the church parking lot.  Never had there been this many cars when we had a rehearsal.  I proceeded to ask my question to Rachel.

"They're having a meeting," she replied, not meeting my eye.

"A meeting," I repeated.  "About what?"

With a sigh, she turned to me.  "Because of budget costs, they might lay off my dad."  Her dad, Scott, was Edification Pastor.

I couldn't speak.  Rachel continued, "If they lay him off... we might move.  He's always wanted a job in ministry..."

I was shocked.  I wasn't quite sure how to respond.  But suddenly, my protective side came out.  "You can't move!  You won't  move.  I'll kidnap you!"

Rachel laughed, but it sounded false.  By then we had reached the doors.  We didn't say a word to each other as we climed the stairs to our Youth Room.  I still couldn't wrap my mind around this.... Rachel... gone?  The idea of losing her was incomprehensible.  It couldn't happen.
