Chapter 9Mature

After what seemed like hours, Ellie and John arrived at a hotel.

“Here we are.” John said quietly.

They both got out of the car and walked into the foyer.

“Umm, I’ll book a room you into a room and arrange for a taxi to pick you up tomorrow morning.”

“You don’t have to. I don’t really deserve anything after what I’ve done.”

“I don’t think you knew what you were doing. But, yeah, I’ll go and get you a room.”

“I’ll pay you back by the end of the week.”

“I know.”

“And, can you let me deal with your injuries? It’s the least I can do.”

“Do you think it’s wise after this afternoon?”

“We’re adults. What’s Helen going to say if you turn up at home with a bust lip and black eye?”

“She wouldn’t be happy. Fine, you can deal with them.”

“Thank you.”

Ellie and John walked over to Reception. The man behind the desk frowned.

“Are you ok, sir?”

“Yes, I’m fine. It’s nothing to worry about. Umm, is there any chance of getting a room now?”

“We do have a few rooms free. But, you do understand that you will have to pay double our premium rate?”

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

“Ok. Would you like a single or a double?”

John looked at Ellie. “What do you want, Ellie?”

“You know.”

John turned back to the receptionist. “Double, please.”

Ten minutes later, John and Ellie arrived in their room.

“Where did the receptionist say the first-aid box was, John?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m sure I’ll find it.”

“No, just listen. I don’t matter. Whatever happens, I’ll heal. But, you won’t.”

“I’m sure he said it was in the bathroom.” Ellie walked into the en-suite.

“Ellie, you’re not listening.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I want to help you. I want you to be ok. I want us to be ok.”

Ellie poked her head around the door. “What ‘us’?”

“Come on, we’re going to spend the night together.”

“As friends.”

“Ok. I want us, as friends, to be alright. But, you need to tell me why you lashed out like that.”

Ellie walked out of the en-suite, and sat on the bed.

“I can’t.”

“You can. You’ve only told yourself you can’t.”

“I don’t want you to know. I don’t want anyone to know, but really not you.”

“You’ve told Claire.”

“I didn’t tell her. She found out.”

“If you don’t tell me, then I’ll ask her. Tomorrow.”

“You won’t.”

“Fine, I’ll guess. Umm, are you with someone?”

“Shut up.”

“Have you ruined someone’s life?”

“Shut up.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“Shut up!”

“Just tell me what it is!”

“I was raped!”

John’s face dropped.

“Now you know. Are you glad you’ve made me tell you?”

“No, of course not."

“Well, you shouldn’t ask questions then.”

“Who? Who did it?”

“What do you care? And even if you did, I wouldn’t tell you.”

“Of course I care. I care a lot.”

“I wouldn’t tell.” Ellie carried on. “Because, you’re just a lying cheat.”

“Say whatever you want to me. I know this isn’t you. You’re just hurt. And, you’ve been hurt for a long time. Just tell me who did it to you and I promise you I’ll make it alright again.”

“I’ve already told you – you can’t make it right.”

“Why not?”

“Because, they’re dead.”

“Well, they can’t hurt you anymore.”

“They can, because they got away with it.”

The End
