Sophie's heart wasn't the only one that was pounding, so was Andrew's, though she wouldn't know it, because she was the one on the heart monitor, not him, thankfully. He wasn't one for kissing patients, because that would be considered sexual harassment, and he'd probably get sued for it too. Honest to god, he'd never been tempted to kiss a patient, probably because he was too busy doing his job to focus on anything else, other than saving someone's life. He knew that kissing her was more than just trying to offer her some comfort in an emotional situation. There was an obvious attraction between them, a chemistry that he never thought he would develop with her, let alone any other patient...a romantic chemistry. He loved the fact that the kiss had made her heart race, and her blush only made him smile more. She looked at him, he looked at her, and was about to try and fomulate a sentence, when he heard the door fly open, followed by his best friend, Emma's voice. The sudden interruption caused him to jump in surprise. A deep scowl crossed his face at the words "it's about Moira," a huge cloud of guilt looming over his head as he exchanged a look with a suddenly worried looking Sophie.
He sighed deeply. He didn't have a good feeling about this, and could already feel a lump forming in his throat. "I'll be right back, okay?" He said softly. Sophie gingerly nodded her head. As tempted as he was to give her a forehead or cheek a quick kiss good-bye, he resisted the urge. If Emma saw him do it, he would have some explaining to do. Pushing himself up from the bed, he turned back to face her, shoving his hands in the side pockets of his lab coat. "You're going to have to be admitted," he told her, starting backwards on his heels towards the door. "A nurse will be in to get you into a gown."
"Andrew!" Emma cried.
"I'm coming, Em!" He shouted back, turning and striding out of the room, joining his best friend out in the hall. Pushing down the huge lump in his throat, he fell in step beside her as she started down the corridor back towards the nurses station. "What's the big hurry? What's wrong with her sister?"
"She's in a coma, Andrew."
Andrew stopped dead in his tracks, his heart plummeting to the pit of his stomach, his forehead wrinkling inquisitively. "What? What do you mean she's in a coma? She was fine earlier. She was ready to go home. How did she end up in a coma?"
"Michael and I think there might be due to some internal hemorraging, that sprang up after her last MRI," she told him. "She's on a respirator at the moment, but she's unresponsive and her vitals are unstable. She's going to have to be moved up to the ICU eventually."
Andrew heaved a deep sigh, running both of his hands over his face. "Shit..." Turning on his heels, he starting pacing back and forth, trying to figure out how he was going to break this news to Sophie, and if he did, how he would console her, or if she could even be consoled. What if it ruined his relationship with her? What if she never spoke to him again? What if she demanded another doctor? He scratched his head and stopped pacing, crossing his arms firmly over his chest.
Emma glanced back at Sophie's room then at him. "You'd better tell her."
"I don't know if I can."
"It's your job, Andrew. Just try and be as sympathetic and gently as you can with her. She's her next of kin, she's going to have to make a decision about her choice of treatment. You've done this countless times before."
He gently nodded his head in understanding, but said nothing.
"Michael and I will update you on her sister's condition later," she said, "though I don't think there's going to be much change, but we're going to take her up to surgery and try and repair it...if we can, but even if we do, there's probably going to be some neurological damage."
He scowled deeply. "I know."
"I've got to get back to the OR," said Emma. He gently nodded, watching her walk off towards the elevators and biting back his frustration. Damn it. What was he going to do? He couldn't go back in her room and break this news to her. Not now. Not after he finally got her calmed down.
