Sophie leaned into Dr. Barnett's shoulder, trying but failing to stop her tears. After a few minutes she sat back, wiping her tears.
She laughed. "I'm so sorry." she said. "I got your shirt soaked."
Dr. Barnett looked down and shrugged. He hardly looked bothered.
"It's ok." he said, waving his hand in the air. "It'll dry."
Sophie nodded, sniffling. Dr. Barnett looked around and handed Sophie a box of tissues.
Sophie nodded her thanks, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
Then she started laughing again.
"This is ridiculous." she said. "I'm sorry. We just met, and already you've seen more emotions out of me than my family has since my parents death. It's just, ever since then, I've tried to keep my emotions in check and to myself. I've been so afraid of showing my true feelings…"
Sophie shook her head, finally realizing that Dr. Barnett hadn't moved at all. They were sitting dangerously close. She looked into his eyes.
"What is it about you?" she asked.
He shrugged. "What is what about me?"
Sophie smiled. "How have you gotten so much out of me? Moira doesn't know this much about me, and she's my sister and closest friend, for crying out loud! And you, I just met you." she said, giving him a playful punch on the shoulder.
She didn't even notice that she'd slipped closer to him.
