Adrian's dark green eyes gazed longingly into the sapphire pools of confusion. Annalise didn't know what to say so she waited, impatience growing inside her. Yet the secret promise that Adrian seemed to hold for her, locked behind that passionate gaze had her wanting to lean in and close the distance between them.
She felt she knew where he was going with this...yet she had to hear it. She didn't want to regret making a mistake with the boy she'd fallen in love with.
Adrian didn't let go of her hand and instead reached out with his own to wipe the one stray tear. Catching it on the tip of his finger, he smiled at Annalise and then whispered, "How can you not see? How can you not tell how enchanted I am by you Annalise?"
Her breath caught in her throat as she looked up at him with wide-eyed wonder. Was he really saying this?
"Is it not obvious how madly I am in love with you?" He stepped closer to her, though only a second ago she'd thought it was impossible. Yet there he was, looming dangerously above her, his face only inches away from hers. "You made me feel...visible for the first time in my life. And I wish you could continue to make me feel that way for the rest of my life."
Her breathing quickened as he placed an arm around her waist to pull her closer to him, the other stroking her hair in the most fragile manner as if she would so easily fall apart. Annalise was in Adrian's arms and that's all that mattered to her in that second...until he said the next words.
"But our love can never come to be."
