I woke up screaming into my pillow. Max came in and hugged me fiercely.
"It's OK, it's OK" he muttered.
"That was so scary" I whispered shakily.
"You've been screaming all night Sara. What were you dreaming about?"
"I... I don't know... I-" and then it dawned on me.
"Dying" Max spoke my thoughts quietly. "You were dreaming that you were dying, weren't you?"
"I was" I sighed. He sighed too. I almost fell asleep leaning against him until he moved.
"Come on Sara. Go back to sleep. It's the middle of the night"
"No it's not, it's half two in the morning"
"I don't want to go back to sleep. That dream scared me too much" I said truthfully. Max sighed. Then, Abbie appeared at the opening of the tent.
"I heard you screaming, but I didn't want to disturb you in case you were still asleep. But then I heard you talking so I came to see if you're OK" she said quietly.
"Yeah, I'm fine" I smiled "Are you OK?"
"Yeah, I'm fine too... I guess" she said. There was a few seconds silence. "Max?"
"I'm... I'm kinda hungry"
"Really?" I sat up.
"Are you sure?" Max was shocked.
"Yes. I'm starving"
"Yes Max. She's literally starving. Let's have breakfast at quarter to four in the morning!" I grinned. And then... and then... and then Abbie smiled. For the first time in weeks, she actually smiled a genuine, happy smile.
