"I'm going to check on Max" I told Ben. He nodded and went back to the tree he was at. I went to Max and sat down beside him. I was getting worried about him. I was watching the sun creep slowly higher into the sky when he woke.

"Sara?" he sounded weak, not at all like himself, at first I thought he was Ben. I turned around to see him propped upon one elbow, the look of pain on his face made me want to cry.

"Oh Max!" I cried, the tears in my eyes brimming over.

"Sara! Don't cry! I'm OK!" he looked worried, and on the verge of crying himself.

"But you were bleeding... and you were...hurt... and there was were dying" I sobbed. A shocked look crossed Max's face for a brief second.

"Sara." He said "Stop crying"

"I, I, I can't!" I sobbed harder.

"Sara, I can't talk if you're crying so much" he said. A pained look was on his face, and something else, but I didn't know what that was. I sniffed and tried to stop crying. I managed to reduce it to just tears silently sliding down my cheeks. "Sara, you saved me. Again. Thank you."

"You don't need to thank me" I told him quietly "I told you, I'd always save you, I'd never leave you to die"

"You really did risk you're life this time though. You look and sound terrible. And it looks like you were bleeding just as much as I was" he said, indicating the line of blood from my leg where I'd dragged myself over to him. "You could have died"

"I told you I'd die in your place if I had to" I said even more quietly.

"I'd rather me die than you" he told me gently.

"Max. Stop it. I don't like it when you say things like that" I whispered.

"I don't like it when you say things like that" he whispered. I hugged him. He hugged me back.

"I'm so glad you're OK" I said to him.

"I'm glad you're OK too" he sighed.  After a while he pulled me back and stared into my face. The expression I didn't recognise was on his again. He lightly held the tops of my arms and pressed his lips to mine. It wasn't enthusiastic. Not like any of the first kisses I'd read about. Just a kiss on the lips for a few seconds, he slowly came away. He looked into my eyes. I recognised the expression now: love.

"Oh!" I breathed. I closed my eyes. I was finding this a bit hard to understand. I opened them and blinked a few times.

"Are you OK?" he looked worried now. "I shouldn't have done that, I feel like an idiot now"

"No, no! Don't feel like an idiot! I'm fine! I liked it!" I exclaimed. "Wow"

"Well... that's OK then. I suppose" he looked relieved.

The End
