Hearing Things

It was as though my body was in two places at once, and my mind was suspended in the emptiness between those two places.

Every sound echoed like I was standing in a huge deserted cavern.

First, my breathing. Loud and heavy, though still just a background noise.

Then a continuous beep, beep that I couldn't work out the source of.

On top of that, the sound of people talking. Not to me, to each other. Always quiet mumbling.

And the voices. The voices that ricocheted in the darkness, words that repeated themselves to the nothingness.

You'll be OK... You'll be OK...

You're going to pull through... You're going to pull through...

Please... don't... Please... don't...

Things that seemed so clear, but also so surreal. As though one place was the source, and the other was just an echo of what was really there.

Sara, hear me... Sara, hear me...

Wake up, Sara... Wake up, Sara... Sara... Sara... Wake up... Wake up...

It felt like one part of me was asleep, while the other was wide awake.

The End
