"What's that story? You know, the one that goes 'T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse'" I asked, snuggling deeper into the blanket Max had wrapped around me.
"I know that one. The next bit is: the stocking were hung by the chimney with care, in hope that Saint Nicholas soon would be there" Abbie smiled.
"Hmm... The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads" Max continued. "And Mamma in her 'kerchief..."
"And I in my cap, had just settled down for a long winters nap" I grinned. "When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter..."
"I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter!" I jumped up at the same time as Abbie, letting the blanket fall to the ground. We both laughed and fell back to the floor.
"Away to the windows I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash" Max smiled.
"The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, gave the lustre of midday to objects below" I smiled back "When what to my wondering eye should appear? But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer"
"With a little old driver, so lively and quick. I knew it a moment it must be Saint Nick! More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came. He whistled and shouted and called them by name"
"Now, Dasher" I interrupted loudly "Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall. Now dash away, dash away, dash away all!"
Abbie and Max laughed.
"Can we skip a bit?" I yawned "I'm really tired"
"Sure." Max said. "Let's see... He spoke not one more word, but went straight to his work. And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk."
"And laying a finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose. He sprang to is sleigh, to his team gave a whistle. And away they all flew like the down of a thistle"
"But I heard him exclaim... as he drove out of sight" I yawned again and closed my eyes. "Merry Christmas too all and to all a good night"
