That was the thing about Maria. She could command light in a way that even she didn't fully understand. 

As she stood in the total darkness, Maria soaked in the edgy beauty of nothingness. She'd always thrived in the dark; it was her sanctuary. Smiling, she closed her eyes, then waved her arm again. The lights flickered on.

Maria heard footsteps behind her. Waving her arm again, the lights were silenced.
