"So couldn't you just give yourself invisibility, x-ray vision, telekinesis, and force field makers and go after Verell on your own?" Brenda asked.
It was almost midnight in the little hotel room they shared, and Crystal, who had nearly crossed the line into sleep, was jolted back awake. She sighed and rolled over to face Brenda's bed. "No."
The other bed rustled in the darkness as Brenda shifted too. "Why not? Wouldn't it be so much simpler?"
"One person could probably not withstand too many procedures. The only way to do it would be to begin with an embryo so that the baby would grow into his or her abilities, and even then, there would still be a huge risk.
"As for me, I already tested the gravitational resistance on myself, and even a simple flight is exhausting. Plus, what if I die? Who will stop Verell then? Or what if the one person - either me or someone else - with all these powers responds badly to one of the treatments, has an altered personality disorder, goes rogue, and does more harm than Verell ever would? It's better to create a collaborative team. It's stronger that way."
"I guess that makes sense," Brenda yawned, sleepily. "Can I have powers?"
"There is a certain amount of risk in-"
"Am I your best friend or not?"
Crystal grinned. "What kind of supernatural ability did you have in mind?"
"I was thinking something with x-ray vision or electricity control or generation, to enhance my already advanced technological capabilities." There was a smile in her voice.
"Sounds good." Crystal felt her consciousness slipping, the room spun a bit and she squeezed her eyes shut.
"It's like the green goblin." Brenda muttered, half-asleep now.
"In Spiderman, Harry's dad takes performance enhancers and they turn him evil..."
"Oh. Yeah." Crystal whispered. "Just like that."
