My eyes shoot open straight away, and I wake up to find myself back in Aidan's home in the guest room. My face is wet from the tears still streaming down it and I'm crying uncontrollably.
My bedroom door bursts open and then all I can see is the deep blue of Aidan's eyes. He rushes to my side of the bed and takes a seat, pulling the duvet off me and lifting me up to a sitting position. He checks every inch of me before he pulls me onto his lap and I bury my face in his chest and I moan into his shirt.
He rocks me gently back and forth, holding me in his arms as he lays the side of his face on the top of my head.
"Shhh, it's okay. You're okay now, they're gone. You're safe, I've got you. Oh hell Elena I'm so sorry, I'm so so sorry..." and he continues whispering that to me, over and over again like a mantra while I soak him with my salty tears and grab a fistful of his shirt.
Genevieve, James and Clarisse storm into the room, one of them switching on the bedside lamp as they gather around me.
"What in the world is going on here Aidan?" Genevieve asks in a slightly panicked voice, trying to maintain her composure. James checks the windows outside before taking a seat in the lounging chair. Clarisse climbs over the bed to sit on the other side of me, placing a hand on my back and rubbing it in circles.
"It was the Spanish conquests. The city of Tenochtitlan. The soldiers had broken through and were killing the children and abusing the women left behind. There were no soldiers left to protect them and Elena and I were separated by a fleeing stampede of people. She hid in a building while I came back from the Crossover to fetch my sword from my truck. When I went back in, there were soldiers who had taken her and were...they...they were about to..."
He stops there, unable to speak past the lump in his throat as he whispers again, "I'm so so sorry Lena, I'm so sorry..."
James stands up, coming to stand near us. "Did you use the herbs to send her back? The ones I used when you and Clary were still evolving and were not used to travelling back yet?"
Aidan simply nods his head, pulling out the pouch of dried herbs he must have retrieved before coming back from the crossover which his father takes from him quickly.
"That was good thinking son. You probably prevented a bad situation from being a deadly one." James places his hands on Aidan's shoulder as Genevieve kneels in front of where I'm clutching Aidan on the bed. She pulls out a handkerchief and dabs at my eyes which are still flowing slowly with small tears
I'm starting to feel calmer now. My breathing is evening out and my cries have become silent. I release the fistful of Aidan's shirt and Genevieve strokes my hair softly which helps to calm me further.
Clarisse eases up off the bed then pads over towards my door whilst saying "Well, it's too late to go back to bed now and too early to start getting ready for the day if we even carry on with our original plans after this incident. That leaves just one option while we decide what to do next... I'm going to go make us all some tea."
