The Diversion

They quickly climbed down the walls and on a signal from Layke, one of the women screamed. It was an ear-piercing thing, and the sentries turned around. The one closest to them began to run for them.

“Escaped prisoners!” the sentry yelled. No, Layke thought frantically. He shouldn’t have yelled that. Then an idea popped into his head. Grabbing one of the women, he signalled for Lucifer to do the same. Lucifer grabbed the other woman, who was looking very confused.

“We’re pretending to hold you captive,” Layke explained to them. They instantly understood and began struggling.

“Let me go!” one of the women yelled.

“Stop struggling or else I’ll slit your throat,” Lucifer growled, acting so well that it sent shivers down Layke’s spine.

“Help!” Layke’s woman yelled.

“I’ll snap your back,” Layke said menacingly into the woman’s ear. They screamed some more. “We’ll have to go as soon as the two sentries are far enough away from the others,” Layke whispered in the woman’s ear. She nodded slightly. It only took Layke one look to Lucifer to have him understand. Lucifer whispered it in the other woman’s ear. She, too, nodded.

They waited a bit more, Lucifer tensing up to run. The sentries were coming closer now, almost too close for comfort. Before he knew it, Lucifer had yelled; “RUN!” and they were all sprinting towards the trees.

It was as if he wasn’t in his own body anymore. Layke could feel the adrenalin pumping through his veins, but that was about it. He couldn’t even feel his own legs moving or the wind rushing past him.

Suddenly everything went shadier, and they were in the forest. Layke turned, and saw one of the women running in behind him, coming to a stop beside him. The sentries had called the alarm, and Layke knew there was no time to waste.

“We have to find the others,” Layke breathed between pants.

“Yes,” Lucifer answered, looking around. “Where do you think they’ll be?”

“I told them to run into the woods directly in front of them, so that means they’ll be to our right,” Layke panted.

“Come on, then,” Lucifer said. “There’s no time to waste.”

The End
