The Best (and Most) Embarrassing Apology Ever Made [II]

Their shouts temporarily blocked out the sound of his voice, of his serenade before it resurfaced again - louder, more passionate, more Damien-like than ever. Leo smirked at the sight behind me then placed his hands on my shoulders to turn me around. “You don’t want to miss the show he's putting on for you Makayla,” he said. I didn’t have the strength to resist, then immediately regretted not having done so.

I almost died when my eyes flew over the scene in front of me. The crowd was parting as Damien made his way through.

"And although it's always crowded,
you still can find some room."

We were more than twenty feet apart yet his lively green eyes were fixed on me, in a way that made my toes curl. It wasn't just that he was giving me his undivided attention, completely blocking out the girls on one side swooning over his singing, and his athlete friends on the other that were thumping his back in support.

"Where brokenhearted lovers
do cry away their gloom - y'make me so"

It was his voice.

"You make me so lonely, ba-by
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

He was singing me into a state of beautiful, albeit shockingly embarrassing paralysis. A foolish side of my heart didn't want him to stop.

Just as the chorus came to an end, Nick popped out of no where with Adam, each of them stepping out onto either side of Damien. They were both dressed in black, with a red bell-boy hat sat on top of Nick's head. Damien, too, had thrown on a black-suit jacket. My eyes widened in the realization - they were going all-out to make this perfect.

As the next verse began, Nick and Adam began to dance along to the song, to match the lyrics.

"Well, the Bell hop's tears keep flowin',

Hold it - was Nick actually crying? No - he had to have applied some artificial tear drops. Or cut a dozen onions prior to this little show.

"and the desk clerk's dressed in black."

Adam twirled an unsuspecting girl from the audience (who was none other than a very flustered Maddie) as if he were escorting her into an imaginary hotel.

"Well they been so long on lonely street
They ain't ever gonna look back.
You make me so lonely, ba-by
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

As the singing died down and music followed, the three of them begun a dance that I begun to see had clearly been rehearsed beforehand. I could hear Leo's laughter from behind me as we watched Nick take the school-bags off random people from the audience, weighing himself down in worries and successfully filling in the role of a depressed bell-hop. For Adam, girls had lined up, yelling something along the lines of 'pick me Adam!' as he pretended to escort them back to the doors of the school building. And Damien?

He swayed along to the music, throwing the mic in the air and catching it behind his back like a professional drummer would do. He danced his way closer in fluid, effortless motions (need I mention some serious hip action) until he was finally just a couple feet in front of me, smiling as if he'd never been happier.

Bringing the mic back up, he sung, "Hey now, if your baby leaves you, and you got a tale to tell," and grabbed my hand, twirling me into his side so that I faced the audience, face burning, "just take a walk down lonely street to Heartbreak Hotel."

Cheers erupted like this moment was a grand finale. He kept singing, his lips moving, his voice echoing through the air but all I could see was him. His face, and the smile that was on it. And as he begun to twirl and dance me around, singing to me with the sexy croon of the word 'ba-by', I noticed that I was laughing along to his theatrics. I had been this whole time.

It dawned on me that Damien had arranged all this for just that - to see me smile, laugh, and enjoy myself the way I was now. He had known that a simple apology would not have sufficed but that wasn't the reason he had resorted to such a show. It wasn't in him to just settle for 'simple'. This was the 'Damien-way' of making peace...and it was working.

The End
