Nick and I walked in a pleasant silence as we exited the school. He was humming the tune of a song under his breath, that ever constant smile on his lips as he glanced at me, checking, from time to time. I hated to appear like a boring person - that was the last impression I wanted to make on Nick. Yet I didn't know what to talk about.
My mind still swarmed with thoughts of Damien and how I would be able to deal with him throughout the rest of the school year. I still had eight months left to go before I'd graduate and free myself from this place (having only joined three weeks late due to the move). I hoped with all my heart that the school year would whiz by. It was clear to me that Leo was on Damien's side and I couldn't deal with the two of them. Heck, I couldn't even begin to deal with the thought of dealing with them
At least Nick was on my side, or so it seemed.
"So how'd you like your first day?" Nick spoke up, provoking a conversation.
I turned my head, meeting his cheerful gaze and shrugged, a wry smile forming on my lips. "I'd be lying if I said it went well."
Nick raised an eyebrow, slipping his hands into his pockets. Yet that smirk on his lips, similar to the one Leo had given me but not at all annoying, caused me to ask, "What? What are you thinking?"
"Nothing..." His grin widened. "It's just that most girls swoon under Damien's charms. I'm still trying to figure out why it didn't work on you."
"Charms?" I snorted. "Oh, please."
Nick winked at me. "Playing hard to get, are you?"
