"I was just in the area..."
*Ding-dong* Goes the doorbell. With a sigh, I pull out my headphones and pull on my silky dressing gown over my skimpy nightwear. Everyone else, including mum, have gone to bed. The kids because it was long past their bed time, mum because she downed a whole lot of vodka after Dave called. He told her it wasn't going to work out between them, and that they should 'find different paths to take'. I told mum that it wasn't the end, she was only thirty four... There was time! Sure, she had five kids... But some guys like kids!
I am making my way down the stairs when another *ding-dong* is sounded.
"Alright! I'm coming!" I yell. I bet it'll be dad. He moved into the area a month ago and has been turning up on our doorstep non-stop since. Every time he gets pissed in town and needs somewhere to crash for the night so that he won't get done for drink-driving. I sigh. Why did it have to be my hopeless dad who stuck around? Sure, he and mum were married for six years, but jeez!It had been over for ten years! I had thought we were rid of him when he married a pretty french girl and moved over to her homeland with her, but clearly it didn't last, because here he was.
None of mum's other boyfriends have stuck around... Especially not once she was pregnant.. When I was eight, mum got pregnant with her first boyfriend after dad. He scarpered pretty sharpish once she told him. That left her single mum of two. Me, and little Rebecca-Rae. Or Rae-rae as she now liked to be called. Then, after four years, mum was pregnant again. This time it was twins. Their dad had proposed, but left her at the altar when he found out about her pregnancy. Mother of four. Me, Rae-rae, Dylan and Danny. And then, a two years after, Lou made her appearance after mum had a one-night stand with a 'tasty' student who clearly needed his eyes testing. Not one stuck around. But mine did. I sighed, and opened the door a crack.
But when I saw who it was, I totally shocked.
"Jackson! What are you doing here?" I cry, opening the door fully. His dark hair, normally styled in a sort of messy, spiky quiff-type thing (though he got annoyed when I called it a one), was flattened onto his face by the pouring rain. Raindrops were caught in his eyelashes and all over his face and clothes. "J-J?" I was getting a little weirded out. He was just standing there, taking deep breaths and looking straight into my eyes.
Then, silently, he stepped over the threshold and cupped my chin in one freezing, rain-flecked palm. That's when he leaned down and let his lips touch mine. Suddenly, I didn't feel the cold of the wind blowing in through the open door, or his freezing hand on my face. All I felt was an un-ending warmth flowing through me. Fire-works were exploding behind my eyes as he closed the door with his free hand, and then worked it into my hair. I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close. Then, he ended the kiss, both of us breathing hard.
"I was.. just in the area.." He said quietly, and we both laughed.
