Distance.Mature

I slowly awoke, every muscle in my body stiff and aching. I rolled over, and thumped onto the floor. Now I remembered why I was so stiff. I had slept on the sofa. I clambered back onto it, rubbing my eyes, stretching and yawning. I glanced at the clock. Six thirty. I groaned, and decided to go for a run. There was no way I would get any more sleep on that pile of rocks. I slipped into the bedroom, where Eilidh is lying sprawled across the bed. My heart gives a twinge, and I almost climb in next to her, but at the last moment my resolve comes back. No. I won't cave in.

I pull on a thin t-shirt and shorts, find my trainers and sock and leave. I run my usual route, down past the river, then back through the park. The whole way I run as fast as I can without stopping, letting the wind rush through my hair. Half way down the road I realised I haven't brought my ipod, but I quickly decide I don't care.

I get back into the house at seven fifteen, and take a long, slow shower. I clamber out, drying myself thoroughly before padding quickly in and out of the bedroom to retrieve some clothes. I pull on my boxers, jeans and checked hoodie-shirt. I am making myself some toast when Eilidh wanders in, wearing nothing but a silk dressing gown, loosely tied at the waist. I glance up quickly, then avert my gaze.

"Donny.. How long are you going to keep this up?" She asks, irritated. "You can't sulk forever."

"I'm not sulking." I protest.

"Well what are you doing? Seems like you're sulking to me. You won't talk to me, look at me, touch me, sleep in the same bed as me!" She bursts out. "Why don't you just say it? You're breaking up with me!"

"NO!" I cry, suppressing the urge to take her into my arms and kiss her over and over until she forgets any doubts she might have. "Look.. I.. I.."

"What is it?" She snaps. "Spit it out so I can go pack."

"No.. Eilidh.. I love you. I want to be with you. But I don't want to be with this strange, secretive girl who is totally not the woman I love." I say slowly, looking into her eyes.

"I.. I love you too.. But.. Don't you understand? If I could tell you, I would.." She murmurs, looking down, tears welling in her eyes. I cave, and walk over folding my arms about her waist.

"Shhh.." I whisper, kissing the top of her head as she sobs into my shirt. She looks up at me, her eyes filled with tears, and before I can stop myself, I have leant down and kissed her. And before I know it, her robe is on the floor, along with all my clothes, and we are on the bed, all our worries forgotten.

But not for long...

The End
