I say to Jess’s dad on the phone. “Yes sir I will call you as soon as I hear anything.”
As I hung up the phone with Jess’s dad I tried to call Em, even though I knew she said she couldn’t be reached. Before I finished dialing her number she walked up with Jeremy, and the boys were happy to see her.
I had to get the early from camp, under the circumstances. It had been hard balancing the store, the boys, and dealing with Jess’s condition alone.
“What is going on?” Em asks with pure terror in her face.
“I got a call at work last week that Jess had fallen, and I came right home. When I arrived the ambulance was there, and I rode in with them. Jess was in and out of consciousness, and there was a lot of blood. The doctors haven’t been able to tell me much, only that the girls and yes are OK. She slipped into a coma, and the doctors have never seen this before,” I finish explaining.
“She is having two girls?” Em asks with a smile that slowly fades.
“Yes,” I tell Em as she pulls me into a hug.
“Why don’t Jeremy and I take the boys for lunch and to the park?” Em asks me.
“That would be great Em, you don’t mind?” I ask gratefully.
“What is family for,” Em asks shrugging her shoulder. “Call me if you get any news.”
I nod as Em walks off, and I enter Jess’s room. The sight of all the IV’s and the breathing tubes hurt my heart. I just found her, please don’t take her from me, I think to myself. I don’t know what I would do without her, what EM would do without her. I know she was being strong for the boys, but if she would’ve seen Jess like this she would have broke.
The doctor walks in,” Mr. Wilson you should really get some rest.”
I’m not leaving her side,” I tell him.
“There isn’t much we can do but wait, and the twins seem to be stabilized as long as she is,” The doctors tries to console me.
“Doc, in your opinion will she make it out of the coma?” I ask for comfort.
“To be totally honest these things are unpredictable, some do some don’t,” He said leaving the room after checking her vitals.
“Pumpkin, if you can hear me please come back I need you,” I said as the tears leaked down my face.
Jess’s dad was on his way down with Bethany to help with the boys, and I was falling apart. I kissed Jess’s forehead, and ventured for a cup of coffee.
I opened my eyes and I was in a hospital room alone, and I was scared. Then my eyes closed again, and the saw a bright light blinding me.
“NO! I’m not ready yet,” I yelled to whoever heard me.
I finally adjusted my eyes, and my surroundings were unexplainable by words. The beauty was breath taking.
“Jessica? "A familiar voice called.
I whirled around and it was my mom, but that meant I was…
“Am I dead,” I asked her afraid.
“No not quite,” Mom tells me.
“Then where am I,” I ask baffled.
“Come with me honey, there is much to be done,” Mom tells me and we walk down the long corridor.
