I’d been going out with John for a few months when I figured it was probably time to tell my folks I was gay, or at least bisexual. After all, I’d had a girlfriend, and I’d kissed Laura Malone, but then again, who hadn’t kissed Laura Malone? I just… I wasn’t sure how to tell them or how they’d take it. I mean, what about Oliver? He was gay and it’d been spread around that he was a paedophile because of it. What if they’d react the same when I told them?
I spent more than a few weeks near enough giving myself a heart attack over it. John was sympathetic, but he had his own issues to worry about. He was essentially living a double life. As far as his parents were concerned, he was their law abiding, God fearing, straight son. And when they weren’t around, he was busy getting blowjobs from me, the slut down the road. He’d been willing to suck me off at one point, but he’d chickened out of it, settling for a hand job instead. I’d been happy enough to get just that, believe me, and I was kind of proud of him for wanting to try.
I finally picked up the courage to tell Mom and Dad, and had originally planned to tell them over dinner so I could tell Hadley too, but I chickened out of that idea for the sheer fact that I wanted Hadley to know first. After all, back then that little snot was my world. Believe it or not, I can actually be a good brother. I’d sat down with him on his bed after he’d had a shitty day at school, and told him straight up that I was gay. His response? “You do know cooties aren’t real, right?”
“I know, I just like boys instead,” I said, smiling.
“Do Mom and Dad know?” he asked me and I shook my head.
“But I’m going to tell them soon, and you can’t say anything til they know, okay?”
“You’re okay with it, right?” I asked, biting my lip.
“Of course. You’re still my brother,” he smiled and I all but bear hugged him, kissing the top of his head and telling him he was the best brother ever.
Hadley kept to his word at dinner and said nothing about me coming out to him, excusing himself once he was done. I helped Mom clear the table and offered to wash the dishes for her. She eyed me suspiciously as she agreed, disappearing into the living room to chill out like Dad was already doing. I cleaned the dishes til they were spotless, hovering nervously in the doorway. I headed into the living room, figuring it was now or never, and turned off the TV, standing in front of it.
“Everything alright, sweetie?” Mom asked, while Dad tried to switch the TV back on.
“Yeah, everything’s fine. Listen, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Dad looked up at me then. “You have to marry her and the three of you aren’t living here.”
“Dad, I haven’t gotten a girl pregnant.” Far from it.
“Then what is it? Do you need money? Are you in trouble?” Mom asked and I shook my head.
“No. Mom, Dad, I’m… Well, I’m gay,” I said, biting down on my lip the second the words were out of my mouth.
The three of us sat in an awkward silence for all but two seconds before Dad spoke.
“You owe me twenty bucks,” he said, and Mom punched his arm lightly.
I looked at them, confused. Had they not heard a word I’d said or something? Mom looked at me, smiling.
“Cayden, you’re my son. I don’t care if you’re attracted to men, women or little grey space creatures,” she said, making me relax. “It’s a shame I won’t have grandchildren with your eyes, though. You have lovely eyes.”
Wow, because that didn’t make me feel guilty or anything. Mom beckoned me over, wrapping me in a hug and kissing my forehead.
“So, do you have a boyfriend?” she asked, as excited as she would be if I’d just told her I had a girlfriend or something.
“Uh… Yeah. Yeah, I do,” I said, not really sure if John wanted to be outed to my parents.
“Well, what’s his name? When can I meet him?” she smiled.
“I can’t tell you his name for legal reasons,” I winked, “But I can see if he’ll come over and say hi.”
Mom nodded and I got up, heading over to John’s place once I’d made sure Mom wasn’t watching out of the window. John’s mom opened the door, greeting me with a false smile and calling John down. From day one, that woman never liked me. John smiled as he reached the front door, shutting it behind him and pecking me on the lips.
“How did it go?” he asked, leaning on the door.
“They were all great about it. But Mom wants to meet my boyfriend,” I said, biting my lip.
“You don’t think they’d rat me out to my folks, do you?” he asked and I shook my head. “Then let’s go,” he smiled.
I stood there in shock as he let his folks know he was going to mine, taking my hand in his. I grinned at that, pretty much skipping back home. Mom looked up as I came in, and smiled at John.
“Hi, John. Are you here to meet his boyfriend as well?” she asked and John blushed a little.
“Mom, Dad, I’d like you to meet my boyfriend, John,” I smiled.
Mom looked between John and me a few times, the questions she wanted to ask clearly written on her face. I sat down in the armchair, pulling John onto my lap and cuddling up to him while I waited for Mom’s interrogation to start. Once she seemed to have worked it out in her head that me and John were going out, she got into the questioning position; back straight, leaning forward slightly, hands clasped in her lap.
“How long have you two been together?” she asked.
“A few months,” I said casually.
“And how long have you known you were gay?”
I had to stop myself before I said ‘Since Tom spent almost a year fucking me.’
“Well, I kind of started wondering when I met John, but I’ve known for sure since Freshman year,” I said.
“I suppose that explains that awful Amber. Have you two… Are you… sexually active?”
I laughed as John turned as red as a tomato and Dad scrunched up his nose.
“No, we’re not “sexually active.” Well…”
“Does oral count as sexually active?”
“Cayden Thomas Smith, don’t be so vulgar,” Mom frowned, making me laugh. “And it doesn’t count towards what I meant.”
“Then no, we’re not sexually active.”
“Are you planning on… y’know?”
I shrugged. “I’ve been told I’m not allowed to til we’re both eighteen.”
John blushed again. “Please don’t tell my parents.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it, that’s your business. If you two ever need anywhere to spend some time together, you can always hide out here,” Mom smiled.
“Thanks, Mrs. Smith.”
“Don’t mention it. And boys, if and when you do get round to it, make sure you’re safe.”
“Yes, Mom,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“I mean it, Cayden,” she said sternly. “I told your sister the same thing and I’ll tell Hadley the same when he gets a girlfriend.”
“I promise you we will be safe,” I said, ignoring the fact that Tom had never once been remotely safe.
Mom seemed happy enough, though, and gave us permission to leave. How did we celebrate my parents’ approval? We went upstairs to my room and I finally got that blowjob.
