Jeff's Point of View
"Where were you yesterday?" John asked me while he was looking at his laptop screen. We've been looking different colleges for hours now, even though I summarized my choices by two. But it wouldn't hurt to look at a few more, just in case.
"What?" I gave him a stunned look, even though I knew what he was thinking already. I didn't know why he was looking for me last Sunday, since we never hung out during Sundays.
"You heard me." He stopped fiddling with his keyboard and looked straight at me.
"My parents and I were with Leena's family. We went somewhere. Why?"
"You guys have been spending a lot of time together, you know? Even my annoying little sister says so!"
I looked straight on my computer screen to look busy, but my mind was going crazy on about what excuse to say to him. "Well, yeah. Our parents are pretty close now. Why were you looking for me last Sunday?" I immediately changed the subject.
"Technically, I wasn't looking for you. Caroline was." As he said her name, I stopped typing and looked straight at him. "Mhhhhm! You're dead, bro." I haven't really been hanging out with Caroline that much these past few days, which made me feel a little guilty. We text each other and message through chat, but I haven't personally hung out with her. It's not that I was too lazy to go, I just.... didn't want to.
"She went here? In our house?"
"Yeah! She told me she's been waiting for an hour already, your house was empty. She called afterwards asking if you were with me. I said I didn't even know where you were."
"Oh." I felt really sad and guilty about making her wait in hour house.
"Really, man. What's going on?"
"What do you mean?"
"Okay, stop it. Close that computer. NOW." John said with his firm and low voice, ordering me to look him in the eyes. "You don't like her anymore, huh?"
I stayed quiet, not saying a thing. I really don't know what to say, in fact, I didn't even know what to think. Caroline has been my girlfriend for almost 2 years now, I mean, isn't that something great?
"ANSWER ME!" He shouted, looking all serious right now.
"I don't know, okay?! I don't know."
"Well, obviously you don't. If you did you could've just said YES." He was right.
We didn't really like talking about this stuff, but once in a while we'd help each other with stuff like this, just how I helped him with his girlfriend even if he broke up with her after 3 months. "Well, then who do you like now?"
"Look, just because I'n starting to 'not like' my girlfriend now doesn't mean I found a new girl to replace her." DENY. Deny everything.
"Buddy, I have known you for so long. Don't play games with me." He patted my back. "I know you like her."
I just looked straight at his face. We were looking at each other with our serious faces, but after a few seconds, I turned to the other way.
"HA! You do like her!"
"JUST. Shut up okay!" My heart was beating so fast right now.
"Okay, fine. But come on man, why don't you just ask her?"
"Who? Leena? Yeah, right! That would just make things worse. I mean look at her! She's great, she's smart, nice, and beautiful. Even her family is great! But when it comes to her dad, he sees me as one of Leena's cousin or something since my dad and him are super close now. If he finds out that I have feelings for his daughter he's gonna go ballistic on me! He might even get mad at my dad, which would lead to my dad getting mad at me! That cannot happen right now."
"Geez, that's messed up."
"YEAH. Okay, that's why I can't.... even though I want to. I badly want to." John looked at me with a surprised look, and then immediately gave me an irritating smile. I knew what he meant.
"You really want to, huh?"
I let out a loud sigh. "Yeah, I do. But again, I can't. And besides, a guy like me would just clearly make her perfect life get all messed up and complicated."
"What if she liked you too?" My heart was beating fast now as he said that sentence out loud.
"It doesn't matter anyway."
"Yes it does! Jeff, come on! If she likes you too it's destiny I tell ya! What kind of life would you guys have if both of you knew that you liked each other, but both of you were too chicken to say it?!"
"A very sad one, I tell ya."
"Well then, what are you going to do? Stay with a girl that you don't like anymore and let the one you like go?"
"Way to sum up my love life, man."
"You have to tell her at least!!!"
"Are you fucking kidding me??? That's just going to make things awkward between us. No way!"
"Dude, just answer this one question for me and I swear I won't ask you anything else: Do you want to be with Leena?" He said with a deep voice, emphasizing every word in his question. It took me a moment to finally say my answer. It was one word that was so hard, yet so relieving to say.
"Yes." I breathed deeply after I said it. "But, too much is just---"
"If you want to, there are many ways. If you don't want to, there are many excuses."
"But I told you the----"
"Dude, just shut up, okay? You answered YES, period. Just take the advice of your good pal. He's awesome." John said as he both raised his hands to point at his face. "You said YES, am I right?"
"YES. Now shut your face and let's get back to work, you annoying dumb ass." I said to John even though I couldn't focus on what we were doing anymore, thanks to him.
