Just a short one page story that I felt like writing. With a twist ending.
Somniatis means Dream in latin by the way.
I lie on my bed, Mia's legs outstretched across my own. We're laughing so hard I can barely draw breath. "No way!" She gasps out during laughs, reaching out to mock slap me. "You did not!"
"I did! I totally did!" I say, and we both crack up again. When the laughter subsides, we lean back, breathing hard, and letting out small giggles in between breaths.
"What do you want for dinner?" She asks.
"Pizza? We could get a takeaway with garlic bread" I grin at her, and she shudders, I know about her supposed 'fear' of eating garlic, and often tease her for being a vampire about it.
"Eugh," She makes a noise of disgust, and I laugh again. I always laugh with her, although we have deep, quiet conversations at times; but thats's what she's there for, she's my best friend, that's what she does."Well, whatever makes you happy, birthday girl" She flips out her phone and orders it, then winks at me, and says she'll pay.
"You don't have to do that" I complain, but I'm secretly pleased at her generosity.
"Course I do, you know that!" She grins and nudges me.
When the pizza arrives we sit and natter, feeding each other slivers of pizza and telling jokes. Then she brings up the subject I've been dreading.
"So, the new school starting monday, excited?"
"No." It's only one word, but she can sense my fear and denial in it. Shuffling closer, she leans against me.
"Why Em? It'll be fine, except the fact I won't see you all the time, but we'll meet up every weekend, and after school some days. I live like next door practically!"
"I know, but I'm just... what if they don't like me, what if I can't make friends?"
"Hey, they'll love you! For all the reasons that I do, what's not to love? Anyway, even if they're a bunch of losers who can't see how cool you are, I'll still be here right?" She puts an arm round me and I lean into her friendship, but I can't shake the scared, sick feeling I have every time I move schools. Mum makes me because we have to move house a lot, usually because she doesn't pay the bills.
"Don't worry, come on you'll be fine!"
"Okay Okay I won't, but you know, mum's been..."
"Not helping?" She asked, making a face, she understands perfectly what Mum's like.
"Yeah, sometimes I don't know what I'd do without you here."
"You and me both."
"Love you too" She says "And Emily, listen, if ever you-"
"Emily!" My mothers harsh tone breaks through suddenly, and I jumped, sitting up. "Get down here! Now!" Her voice is slurred.
My hand moves slightly to the bruise on my shoulder, and I push up off the bed, pulling Mia with me. "Happy Birthday Emily" I whisper to myself, stroking Mia's hair. Then I push the doll under my pillow, and begin walking downstairs.
