Chapter one

“The new kid”

I woke with a start as the hammer of the alarm clock hit the bells on either side of it; I jumped across the cold hardwood floor in my bare feet over to the dresser to where it rung.  I set my hand down on the hammer and flicked the off switch on the alarm, afterwards stretching upward accompanied with a yawn.  I quickly pulled on some jeans, a black collard t-shirt, socks and shoes, brushed my hair and made my way out to the kitchen.  “What to eat, what to eat?” I asked myself.  I looked at the clock that was on the microwave that read in glowing green numbers, 5:30.  I sighed… “I still have time.”  I quickly made a traditional bowl of cereal, ate, brushed my teeth, grabbed all of my other things, slung my book bag over one shoulder, and was out the door in 15 minutes. Locking my apartment door behind me I then jogged down the stairs taking two at a time. Today was my first day of my senior year of High school.

I walked out the apartment building out onto the street and took a deep breath. No morning traffic, no crowds of people, the bakery had just opened and the fresh smell of bread filled the street. I looked at my watch, 6:00, “I still have time.” I pushed open the bakery’s door and the bell rung; a man’s voice came from the back of the store, “Morning Kid, be with you in a second” I Worked here on the weekends so I knew Frank, the shop owner, fairly well. Somehow I had earned the nickname “Kid” from him because he would always forget my name. Frank was a rather tall guy in his early 30’s, short black hair, green eyes and a nice tan. All of the younger women enjoyed his presence; I guess you could call him a ladies’ man. Frank came around the corner with an apron on and some flour on his hands and arms.

“Hey there, I thought today was supposed to be your first day of school, playing hooky already, how sad.” He shook his head with a grin on his face. I smiled right back at him “You are the last person that I want to hear that from, Mr. Dropout.”  He just laughed “What can I get ya then?” I shook my head and looked down the display of different breads, all of them fresh out of the oven. “I’ll take two French subs.” He smiled and reached behind the display and pulled out the two freshest loaves carefully placing them both into a brown paper bag. I placed a twenty dollar bill on the counter and told him to keep the change for me to pick up on my home. I had just placed the bread in my book bag and stepped back out on the street when a little kindergarten girl to bump into me. I caught her when she almost fell; she looked up at me with tears in her eyes and started crying.

I recognized her from the elementary school about 2 blocks away, I often did deliveries there when I had been working last year, I home schooled myself and finally had earned enough money to enroll in an actual school. “What is wrong Lilly?” She looked up at me and sniffled “I can’t find the school” I smiled and outstretched my hand to her. “Here I’ll take you, here get on” I bent down and she climbed on my back. I glanced down at my watch, 6:30; I only have a half hour. I looked over my shoulder at the Lilly and she was smiling. “Are you ready? I’m going to run really fast to make sure you hold on tight, ok.” She smiled even bigger; to her it would be like flying. I started off at a quick jog, “is that too fast?” She laughed, “Faster, faster!” I started to run and she gave a shrill laugh of excitement clinging to me tightly.
