He's a skater, for Gods sake!

Her friends stared at her in utter disbelief, and then looked back at Ty, who had crossed the road and was heading towards us. “Omigod,” babbled Aimee. “I’m so sorry, Penny. Really, I…”

At that moment Ty arrived. He smiled sheepishly at Penny, and raised an eyebrow at Monique and Aimee, who looked slightly shell shocked.

“Um, Ty, these are my friends Monique and Aimee,” Penelope said lamely. “Monique and Aimee, this is my boyfriend Ty.”

“Nice to meet you,” said Ty politely. Always the gentleman, Penny thought, smiling.

Aimee just nodded, but Monique’s expression had settled into a frown. She grabbed my arm and called, “Just a minute,” to Ty and Aimee.

When we were out of earshot, she turned on me. “What the hell are you doing, Penny? You can’t go out with him! He has an earring; he’s a skater for Gods sake!”

Penny took the abuse in silence.

“What are you thinking of Pen? You have to get rid of him.” It was Aimee, who had decided to join in.

“What is everyone at school going to say? He lives on a council estate. Probably smokes, and drinks, and takes drugs. Lives in a dirty little shack.” Monique examined her perfectly manicured nails.

Aimee nodded. Penny glanced over her shoulder at Ty, who had his hands in his pockets, lounging on the wall. “Seriously, Pen. You are too good for him.”

“Jesus Christ! Shut up will you!” Penelope shouted. “It’s not your decision who I can or can not date! You can’t control my life, and just because he’s not some stuck up rich idiot, doesn’t mean I can’t have him as a boyfriend, OK? I don’t care what rubbish you guys come out with now. Bye.”

She almost spat the last word in their faces, and turned away just before the tears started to flow down her cheeks. Ty looked up as Penny ran towards him. Seeing her crying, he frowned in concern.

“What’s wrong, Pen? Hey, hey, it’s OK now, shush, it’s OK…” He took her in his arms and hugged.

Burying her face in his shoulder, Penny tried to push out thoughts of Monique and Aimee. Probably smokes, drinks, and takes drugs….Common….You’re too good for him …. You can’t go out with him… What’s everyone at school going to say??

Penny could hear Monique and Aimee whispering and giggling quietly as they flounced off, totally unaware at how much they’d hurt their “friend”.

When her crying subsided, Ty took her hand and led her back home in silence. She could almost hear his brain going through the events of this afternoon.

At the gate, he turned to face her. “Penny,” he began solemnly. “I would totally understand if you wanted to dump me right here, right now because of them. So, go ahead. Say it.”

The End
