They were standing on a busy street in Los Angeles, on the sidewalk full of black gum marks in the gathering dusk. He was coming off a relationship that exploded in his face like a fistful of firecrackers. But he was young, there were really no stakes. She looked at him and lowered her eyes, but even though she was watching him their eyes never caught. His bus was coming soon but he wasn't thinking about that.
