Shadow Lord's Daughter: Part Twenty-Five

I nod, grim determination on my face. He steps forward and places both hands on the sides of my head and stares into my eyes. The green pits seem to grow until they consume everything, and then the whole world loses color.

Rustle of black lace, swirling skirts as my mother and I walk through the courtyard in the Shadow Castle. I watch as the toddler-version of me skips through the bare trees, pointing at the cracked flagstones and chipping grey bark. My mom’s laugh as I stop to examine a small hollow in the tree, where a ghost swallow builds his nest, waiting endlessly for his mate…

My first time in the human world. Watching dad use his power to build our home after dark, when the humans can’t see us. Seeing Wraith’s mom, Fallon, standing beside my mom, Wraith’s older brother’s hand held tightly in her own, her stomach beginning to stretch with signs of her pregnancy…

My first Halloween in the human world. Protesting loudly that I was unable to go trick-or-treating with all the other kids. The joy at the mountain of monochrome candy in my room at the castle. How it all turned brightly colored when dad moved it to our human home. The huge ball to celebrate All Hallows Eve in the Shadow Castle. All of the spirits in attendance, me being officially crowned Shadow Princess…

Staying hidden at home, unable to go out and play with the other kids that lived nearby. Mom’s disapproval at having to keep me hidden. Dad freezing me in time to stay safe. Kendra was looking for someone older than seven. The humans would find it strange if I never aged while their children grew older. Going to the supernatural side to watch my favorite dog cross over. Happy tears when Moose found his way to the castle and stayed with us…

Mom helping Fallon deliver her new baby. Dad sitting with Fallon’s other son, explaining about his new brother. Me cringing every time Fallon screamed in pain. Decided to never grow up and have kids. Being called into Fallon’s room after the screaming stopped. Dad lifting me up to see the new baby. Babies are ugly, I thought, staring at the translucent newborn in Fallon’s arms…

Excitement as dad finally decided that Kendra had given up. After all, it had been almost three hundred years since she threatened us. We were safe. I was finally allowed to go to school. Meeting Ryan, Halley, and Brooke in first grade. Inseparable friends from day one. The new girl, Kendra, appearing in class one day, no parents to walk her in. Immediate rivalry…

The End
