Morning Sunlight

I woke up to feel the sand underneath me. I sat up and saw the rest of my class around me, most of them still asleep. Nick however was awake, with a new set of clothes on. He smiled.

"Good morning." I smiled at him and gestured away from the camp. We walked quietly down the beach, and only when we reached the sea, and I could feel the waves running over my toes did I speak.

"Nick...either I was very drunk last night, or have gills."

"I thought you didn't drink."

"I don't. Oh. You you mean it was true?"

"Wow. I still can't believe it."

"Did you forget anything else?" I thought back to last night. The gills, the swimming, the cave...he'd kissed me.

"Oh." He grinned and took my hand.

"Do you want to go for a swim now?" I looked out at the ocean, dying to say yes.

"No Nick, not right now. I want to, but we really ought to get back and help clear up. Besides, I'm really hungry."

"Alright, let's get you back then."

We walked up the beach hand in hand, only to be met by Indya who was up and walking about.

"Oh, so that's where you've been!" I let go of Nick's hand and ran up to her.

"Indya! Don't say anything please!"

"Why not?"

"I'll give you all the gossip!"

"Done." She took my arm and led me off, while I threw an imploring look back at Nick. He was grinning at my embarrassment. I resolved to kill him later. My plotting on how to do this lasted through breakfast, tidy up and Indya's interrogation, until I was finally allowed to go back to Nick and head down to the sea with him once more. And here all my plotting ended, as I let him lead me in to the waves. It was like something out of a fairy tale. The young girl and the merman. Exploring the secrets of the sea together.

The End
