Chapter 4

Author's Note:

Okay, so I may be a tad bit distracted...lmao with my baby sis (cause, she's just crazy like that, lol!). Anywho, I know I've been posting chapter after chapter like crazy today, but try not to get used to it. I do intend to post up at least one chapter a week, but I'm definitely not making any promises (wink). So...there you have it. Hope you enjoy. Come at me bro! ;)

Chapter 4

When the darkness swirled back around me, I was certain that I was back in my After-death Realm, and for a moment I was comforted slightly by that assumption...until I realized it was just that, an assumption. I felt an icy breeze, so painfully cold it felt like the wind was peeling back my flesh. Flesh, and cold...I was still in my physical body.

This understanding knotted in my stomach and I cringed, afraid to open my eyes again. Fearing what might happen if I kept them closed won out and I blinked quickly, expecting light or brightness to momentarily blind me...but there was none, it was just as dark as it had been before I opened my eyes.

I was no longer at the cemetary, lying over my grave and staring at the sky. I now stood--but how, without enough energy to even lift my eyelids, I was unsure--gazing out at nothing. I turned to take in my surroundings and barely managed to stifle a scream as I jumped backward at the glare of familiar silver eyes before me.

"You!" I pointed an accusing finger at him, my arm trembling.

He pressed a finger to his lips and shushed me before beckoning me towards him.

I shook my head incredulously at him. He was mad if he thought I would voluntarily go with him...anywhere! He took a step toward me and my eyes widened in fear. He put his hands up in surrender when I stepped backward.

I quickly ran through the pros and cons of running versus fighting him. "You stay away from me!" I screeched as he stepped closer.

He rolled his eyes and sighed, seemingly defeated. Just as I turned to run, decidedly my best option, he lunged forward and took hold of me. "I'm not going to hurt you," he whispered, keeping his right hand firmly pressed against my mouth. "Don't scream," the warmth of his breath blew past my ear and I quivered a bit, confused by the warmth I felt from him. Was he human? He kept his left hand tightly wound around my waist, keeping my back snug against his chest.

I gulped and quickly nodded, agreeing that I would not scream, and slowly he lifted his hand from my mouth. I thought of screaming, but realizing my position and his proximity, I figured my life--or whatever I could call it now--wasn't worth losing over it.

"Who are you?" I whispered through clenched teeth.

"I'm here to help you," he stated simply. He tightened his hold of me as I struggled to free myself from him. "You're wasting your energy, and you'll need it to escape this place, so stop struggling," he bit out, his voice sharp and curt. When I ignored his warning, his grip became nearly unbearable and he restrained my arms so that I could no longer struggle against him. "I'm not trying to hurt you," he loosened slightly, "but you need to listen to me."

"You killed me!" I bit out. "You took my life and now you want me to listen to you?" my voice quivered and broke, and I fought to keep the tears from trailing down my face.

"You're illness killed you," his said quietly. "I would never harm you. My only purpose was to protect you," the somberness in his voice matched the sentiment in my heart. I stopped struggling and instead fell back against him for support. "I'm here to save you from this place and take you back home."

I remained silent for a moment and sighed. "And where exactly is 'home'?"

"Aparently, it's back to the land of the living," he said, his voice holding a lilt of confusion. "I'm going to release you, but you have to promise not to run from me."

"Where would I run to?" I asked sarcastically. He stayed silent, his hold remaining, until finally I huffed. "Fine, I promise not to run."

He gently removed his grip from around my arms and waist, but quickly grabbed the left sleeve of my shirt when I stepped away from him.

I turned to give him an accusing glare, but stopped short of trembling at his intimidating form. His eyes were as silver as the full moon, and seemed to glow even brighter against his dark golden skin, settling fear in my heart as they did that first night I saw him. He stood just over a foot taller than myself, his broad shoulders making his already-large frame seem colossal. His hair was a silky black, as dark as my own, and curled slightly over his ears and forhead. I flinched as he brought a hand to my face and wiped away a tear that had trailed down my face.

"I hate that you fear me so," his eyebrows furrowed as his eyes twinkled in anguish. "I will get you to trust me again," he whispered, moreso to himself than me.

I lowered my gaze from the pain in his eyes, silently musing over what he'd said, until he tugged at my sleeve for my attention. I lifted a questioning eyebrow.

"We must be going, they've already been notified of your arrival. They'll be after us any minute," he stated evenly. "No questions," he said before I could take a breath,"not yet," he added.
