They tried to blend in with the other passengers milling around on the platform. They shamelessly listened in to conversations, and what they heard was not what happened. The rumor most common, among the passengers, was that a Doctor Holliday shot an unarmed man for cheating at cards.
Archie whispered to Kate, "I've got to go back and clear this up. I have to explain that it was an accident."
Kate graped Archie by the arms, their faces so close he could smell her minty breath. "Archie, don't you understand, they will hang you. We're not back home where they know you're an idiot."
"I'm not an..."
"Come," Kate said. With her arm tucked into his she guided him back onto the train. Once back into their compartment, Archie flopped down on the bench. Holding his head with both hands, he said, "What am I going to do?"
Kate leaned over Archie and closed the shutters on the window. "We can't stay on the train, that's for sure. This is the first place they'll look.'
Archie looked up through his fingers. "If we had some horses we could make a run for it'
Kate sat down across from Archie. "How much money do you have on you?"
Archie counted out his money, placing the big bills on the bench beside him. "I started today with two hundred and now I have four fifty."
Kate removed her bonnet and fluffed out her hair. "Okay, here's what we'll do; you give me three hundred and I'll go to the livery stable and buy a couple of horse."
Archie shook his head. "Kate, they know you were with me."
"You're right. ---- Of course if they didn't know it was me."
Her plan wasn't the greatest, but it was the only one they had. Several minutes later she said, "You can look now."
Archie removed his hat from over his eyes and looked up at Kate. "Lord a mercy, you do look like a man. This might work after all." Kate had donned the spare suit of clothes from Archie's valise.
Archie watched, fascinated, as Kate pinned up her hair, and settled his hat on her head. Although Kate had a beautiful face, she was born with her fathers large nose. She looked enough like a man to pass inspection. "Now, I'm going to go get us some horses. You can stay here or work yourself to the North end of town, and I don't think staying here would be smart."
Kate slid open the compartment door and looked out in both directions. She turned back to Archie, "I'll look for you on the north end of town. If you're not there I'll circle back here."
Archie said, "Good luck, Kate"
Kate waggled a couple of fingers at him, and she was gone.
