SCALES-86

Athena came up to me after the meeting and handed me an envelope.

I looked at it for a second before emptying its contents on the table, finding various, blurry photos of a hooded figure.

A very familiar hooded figure.

"What is this?" I asked, picking one up and squinting at it.

"This is someone who's been sneaking around the camp. It may very well be our mole."

I raised an eyebrow.

"The mole? How do we know that?"

She shrugged.

"We don't. But it's the only lead we have. And with the Eunoe so close..."

"It pays to be safe." I agreed, "I'm on it."

"So...what are we doing again?"

I sighed, handing Eversio the bow.

"We're faking a life-and-death situation. To attract a mystery hooded figure."

"Because you think that they're your guardian angel or something?"

"No, because..." I stopped myself, for the sake of secrecy, "Yeah. Sure."

I was pretty sure the photos Athena had shown me were of the same hooded figure that had saved me when I fell from the castle and when the crazy cyclops almost killed me.

What did those instances have in common?

Me. In danger.

"So what do I do?" Eversio asked, scratching his head.

I rolled my eyes.

"Attract some kind of beast. One that looks dangerous but really isn't. Stay close, just in case hoodie doesn't show and I need backup. Make sense?"

He nodded his head yes and rode off towards the horizon.

"So, now we wait?" Rocky asked, tossing his head.

"Yeah, I guess." I shrugged, "I don't really know what I'm doing."

"Really?"

"Yeah. But this way, I can at least tell Athena I tried. I think she might be a little paranoid about this whole business."

Rocky didn't bother answering so I assumed that he agreed.

I looked up to the sound of the earth shuddering, and felt my blood run cold.

There, towering on the horizon, was...something.

From that distance I couldn't quite tell what it was, but it was growing in size.

Probably because it was getting closer. Fast.

"Rocky, what is that?"

"Can't quite tell, but I think...it's a dragon."

"A dragon?!"

"And we might want to get a move on."

I didn't need any further encouragement. I picked up the reins and urged Rocky into a gallop.

I glanced back over my shoulder to see that the dragon was pounding huge wings, and had approached to within a few hundred yards.

"Where the hell is Eversio?"

Rocky snorted.

"I don't see the bugger."

Great.

After a few more minutes of freaking out I heard an inhuman screech. I looked up just in time to see a huge, silver dragon flying above us.

My hair was whipping around my face because of the ridiculous gusts formed by its massive wings, and I had to squint because of the glare coming off of its glistening scales.

I barely had time to react before I felt pain blazing across my side and a vice-like grip around my waist.

I yelped as I felt myself being lifted up and off of Rocky, and tried with little success to pry open the huge claw holding me.

The ground quickly shrank away from me, and I held back the urge to barf.

I drew my sword and tried slicing at the claw, but my blows bounced off with a dull noise.

Eventually I tired and hung limply, wondering if playing dead would help.

It worked for bears, didn't it?

The End
