SCALES-36

"Bob, you have to tell me."

WHY?

I sighed.

"I...kind of have to talk to him about something."

LET ME GUESS, YOU'RE CONFESSING YOUR UNDYING LOVE-

"Um, no."

THEN WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY BE?

"Why do you need to know this?" I asked, rolling my eyes.

WELL, THE PRINCE'S SAFETY IS MY RESPONSIBILITY. I HAVE TO MAKE SURE HE'S ONLY INTERRUPTED IN HIS SULKING IF IT'S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

"In other words, you want something to gossip about?"

PRETTY MUCH.

"I have to apologize to him, okay? Sooner than later if that's possible."

FOR WHAT? OH, LET ME GUESS, HE FOUND YOUR DIARY FILLED WITH VIVID FANTASIES OF-

"I don't even have a diary!" I interjected, exasperated, "He's mad that I haven't ended my lessons with the king."

OH. SO HE'S JEALOUS.

"That his dad is giving me lessons?" I asked, puzzled.

NO. JEALOUS THAT YOU'VE MANAGED TO GET MORE OF LUCIFER'S ATTENTION IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS THAN THE PRINCE HAD IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE.

"What?"

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW THIS, BUT WHEN A FATHER'S CONSTANTLY SEDUCING WOMEN HE HAS VERY LITTLE TIME FOR HIS CHILDREN.

"So, Eversio was...neglected?"

I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING.

"Can you tell me where he is now?"

CHECK THE ROOF. YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKES TO BE MISERABLE THERE.

"Thanks Bob!" I offered, getting up off the bench and running towards the steps.

When I got to the battlements I glanced around, trying to find any sign of Eversio.

I walked along the stone turrets until I noticed a head of blonde hair, pausing to collect myself before continuing.

"Hey, um..." I started, "I wanted to apologize for earlier."

The head turned towards me and I tried not to jump when I realized silver eyes were watching me. Lucifer.

He smirked.

"No need to worry, Commander. Your conduct was hardly a matter of concern. I do appreciate the gesture."

I took a half-step back, eager to leave, but he tutted.

"Leaving already? At least bear with your insufferable king a moment longer."

He patted the space beside him on the battlement wall and I walked over hesitantly, sitting on the cold stone.

"Too cold?" Lucifer offered, touching our shared seat.

It warmed considerably and I had to admit, it was a pretty neat trick.

"I've been watching you, Commander."

I raised an eyebrow.

"You have?"

He laughed.

"Contrary to what Eversio would have you believe, I'm not an entirely irresponsible ruler. You've been doing well, far better than many other humans could do. You have a mind for the military."

"Thank you?"

"If you continue to serve me well, I can offer you things beyond your imagination."

I frowned.

"I think I can only imagine them too well."

He chuckled, waving his hand and making a golden apple appear in it.

"Do you know what this is?"

"An apple?"

"Fruit from the Tree of Life. Immortality."

I reached out to touch it but my fingers passed through it. An illusion.

"Do you even have any of it?" I asked incredulously.

"Every thousand years Heaven sends one as a diplomatic gift.Who's to say I can't save you a bite?"

I paused in thought.

"You mean...I would..."

"You could live forever."

The End
