No, please…

You can’t do this to me…

How dare you…how dare you…?

What right do you have…?

No, please, don’t say so…please…

“I’m sorry, Kathryn" came the crisp ominous voice.

How can you…HOW DARE YOU…?

‘You can leave” the voice continued in the same poised voice.

I gave you two years…two whole years…

How did you find it within yourself to fling me aside like a worthless coin?

“I don’t have to explain my actions or decisions to you”

Oh…I forgot…how could I be so stupid…you will remain a money hungry piece of crap all your life. That is all you are fit for. You have no respect for anyone, not even for yourself. I've never seen anyone treat himself worse than you have. It’s good in a way…I get rid of you too in the bargain. You are a loathsome creature. I’m glad that you had to take this decision…I have absolutely no respect for you anymore…

The door shut with a loud thump and loud footsteps could be heard clattering down the stairs until the first floor landing. The young lady sank on the last stair, crying bitterly. Anyone in her position would do the same.

“Kath?” a voice resounded down the stairwell, accompanied by quick skidding on the stairs, “KATH?”

She looked up to see a disheveled young man standing on top of the stairs, stunned. “I just heard…” he whispered. She turned her face away, embarrassed and humiliated. He walked down the stairs slowly and took a place next to her.

Go away…

‘I can’t.” he admitted, “I can’t just go and leave you to cry alone. I’m not Nicholas.”

Damn right you aren’t Nick…He’s a man of substance…you are a good for nothing…

“True” he acceded again “If you are looking for a man of ‘substance’ then it sure ain’t me. However, if it’s any other parameter, I’m sure that I qualify too. Position isn’t the only thing in the world.”

She hugged her knees closer to herself until she turned into a tight ball, resembling a caterpillar. “He was too old for you anyway” the young man continued, “A nine year age gap isn’t really ideal, you know.”

 I don’t care…

“You don’t, but he did” he replied, “Do you want me to drop you home?''

"No" she said haughtily, getting up, "I can manage on my own."

The End
