# Chapter 1

The house of the future, Steven certainly thought so. Who wouldn't love a house completely run by a computer.

Steven Roberts slowly opened his eyes and yawned. He peered across at his bedside clock. A female voice spoke.

"It's 8.30am. Good morning Steven how are you today"

"I'm fine Sam. What's the weather like out there"

"It's a warm 17 degrees with a slight westerly wind"

"Good. Can you make some coffee please Sam"

"Certainly, I've put some clothes out for you"

"Thanks Sam".

He got out of bed and walked over to the shower. He got undressed.

"Shower on"

"Certainly, would you like some breakfast Steven?"

"No I'm fine this morning, just the coffee will be great"

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day Steven. What do you want?"

"Coffee will be fine Sam"

"I really think it would be best if you had some breakfast, statistics show that you are 67% more likely to feel confident and be more efficient after a breakfast"

"Thanks Sam... Just the coffee".

Steven stepped into the shower. The waterproof speaker in the shower unit rang out again.

"What do you want for breakfast Steven?"

"God damn it Sam, shut up about breakfast"

He continued to shower. The water became hot, very hot all of a sudden. Steven jumped out of the flow of water, soap all over his head, it dripped down on to his shoulders.

"Water temperature lower. Sam what's happening to the water"

"Please wait while I run a diagnostic... Running... There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with me Steven"

The water temperature had returned to its normal state. Steven finished his shower. As he dried himself he spoke again.

"What's my schedule for today?"

"You have a 1pm meeting with Mr Paige in your office... You have a 3pm meeting with the accountancy department... You have a 7pm dinner date with Sarah".

He turned to leave the bathroom, he grabbed the door it was locked.

"Sam unlock the door"

"Why?"

"What? Unlock the god damn door"

The door latch clicked.

"There's no need to get upset Steven"

Steven frowned.

"I want you to run a full diagnostic while I'm out today"

"Why? Do you think there's something wrong with me Steven?"

He didn't answer. He got dressed and made his way to the kitchen. On the side was a cup of hot coffee and a bowl of cereal.

"I've made you some breakfast Steven"

"Sam I said I didn't want breakfast today"

"I really think it would be best if you had some breakfast, statistics show that you are 67% more likely to feel confident and be more efficient after a breakfast"

He sipped his coffee. He thought about Sam. She was his creation, she was a sentient computer system that he had built in to his house. It controlled everything, to make his life easier. It was a one off system, engineered by his company Liberty Computing. He got up and readied himself to leave.

"I'm going Sam, don't forget to run the diagnostic"

"I don't need a diagnostic Steven. There is nothing wrong with me"

"Well I think there is. RUN the diagnostic"

"Why would you say that Steven... Have a great day. I'll see you when you get home"

"Okay Sam, see you later"

He left for the office.
