Peppi sighed, and switched off the camera. She would take it everywhere now, documenting what she saw in the world. It would be her companion during the days she fought, and the days she ran. And then, maybe one day, someone would find it, long after she was gone.
She got up, knowing that the reason she came could not be put off any longer. Walking to the kitchen, she opened every cupboard and took out all the food she could find. Her big bag full, she went to her old room. Unchanged, throughout the years of neglect, a think layer of dust was the only indication that it was now unused. A tear trickled down Peppi’s face as she thought of the memories she had of this room. She shook her head and wiped it away. She had to concentrate.
Walking to the door, she got a bottle of river water from her bag. Pouring it over herself, she opened the door, and walked out into the bright sunlight. It was the best she could do to blend in. be one of the dead. Keeping her eyes to the ground, she slowly walked up the street. She heard footsteps behind her, and quickened her pace.
‘Stop!’ someone shouted, as a hand grabbed her shoulder.
Its over, she thought.
