“I don’t know, why don’t you enlighten me?” Zeke replied sarcastically, giving his best sardonic smile.
“Speeding and reckless driving,” he informed him, doing his best to ignore the sarcasm.
Zeke’s fake shock was just antagonising the police officer further.
“Zeke, shut up,” Beth hissed at him.
“You should listen to her, son. Can I have a look at your driving license please?”
“I’m afraid I don’t have it with me,” Zeke said, obviously forcing himself to be polite, for which Beth was grateful.
“Really? That’s a shame. How about I ask you to step out of the car so we can talk better?”
“‘No’?” the officer asked, raising an eyebrow. He subtly gestured for the other officer in the car, another man, who got out slowly and began to walk over. “I need to ask you to step out of the car please, sir.”
“Zeke, just do as he says,” Beth snapped at him, feeling nervous; she’d never been pulled over before. Zeke turned his head to her and looked at her questioningly. “Just do it.”
He sighed before getting out, shutting the door behind him. He pressed a button on the key fob to close the window.
Beth didn’t hear what the two of them said, but sure enough, Zeke was getting arrested a few minutes later. Both she and Caelan were scrambling to get out of the car, hearing the end of Zeke’s rights.
“Oh, what’s this?” the officer asked as he cuffed Zeke. He pulled Zeke’s dagger out of his waistband. “Concealed weapons, this is getting more serious. Search the other one,” he commanded the second policeman.
“The fuck did you say, Zeke?” Caelan demanded as he got searched, which brought out a gun and a small knife.
Zeke didn’t reply.
“So which one of these gangsters are you engaged to, sweetheart?” the first officer asked.
“Neither,” she spat at him.
“And who’s he to you then?” he asked Zeke. “Your brother?”
“My boyfriend,” he snapped.
“Oh, I see,” he laughed. “Is that true?” he asked Caelan.
“Of course it is, why wouldn’t it be?” Caelan asked, trying to remain calm.
The policeman didn’t reply. Beth didn’t know what to say or do as she watched.
“Well, doesn’t this bring back memories of a certain Shavuoth, Caelan?” Zeke laughed, despite the situation.
“Oh, shut up, you imbecile,” Caelan snapped back.
The two police officers took Zeke and Caelan to the police car and sat them in the back, the first coming back to collect the weapons and the second to get Beth.
“I’m afraid we have to arrest you as an accomplice,” he apologised with a small contrite smile.
“Whatever, as long as I can stay with them,” she said, presenting her hands to him.
He nodded and snapped the handcuffs around her wrists, taking a gentle hold on her elbow and leading her to the car, sitting her beside Caelan who was in the middle but didn’t look happy about it.
