“Hey,” she greeted him as he sat down.
“Hey,” he replied with a brief smile.
“So, where are we going?”
“I think my mind decided on Glasgow. I agree with it.”
“You'll find out soon enough.”
A waitress brought their food over and Zeke just watched as they devoured it.
“If you were that hungry, you should have said something and we would have stopped sooner,” he said.
“You weren't responding to either of us so we didn't bother,” Caelan replied.
Caelan shook his head slightly. “It's alright.”
Zeke yawned and leaned back in his chair. It was obvious to Beth that he was really tired. She glanced over at Caelan and apparently he saw it too.
“Zeke, we're staying in that hotel across the way tonight,” Caelan said decidedly.
“What? Why?” Zeke asked.
“You can hardly keep your eyes open. You were tired before you came into our room and... stuff happened. I am not having you risking all our lives because you want to get there quickly.” After a moment, Zeke nodded. “Good. Now, after we've eaten, we'll go over there and get two rooms so we can all sleep.”
“No. One room. We have to stay together.”
“Is that okay with you?” Caelan asked Beth.
“Sure, as long as you guys don't plan on doing anything.”
Caelan rolled his eyes at her.
After they'd finished eating, they went across the car park to the hotel. Caelan linked his arms through Zeke's and Beth's so they were in a chain. Beth smiled and leant on his arm as they walked.
The receptionist gave them multiple odd looks as they got the one room, handing over the key to one just down the hallway. Caelan thanked her as he took it, dragging them down there. Zeke opened the door to the room and looked around it cautiously. And after deciding it was safe, he lay down on the far end of the king bed, wrapped his arms around the pillows and closed his eyes.
Caelan went over to him and pulled the covers up over him, stroking his hair. Zeke sighed.
“I'm going to go for a shower,” Beth told them, grabbing a towel and walking into the bathroom.
She looked at herself in the mirror. There were bags forming under her eyes, and her hair needed a good brush. She took her clothes off slowly, suddenly feeling as if every muscle in her body was made of lead. There was just something about knowing there was a bed next door that made you even more tired.
Clambering into the bath, she stood back and turned the shower on. The water pressure was exactly what you'd expect in a hotel: awful. At least the water was hot, after a couple of minutes anyway.
After she'd taken her shower, she wrapped the towel around herself and picked up her clothes before walking back into the room. On the bed, Zeke was curled up in Caelan's arms, his hair across his face. Beth smiled at the scene. She heard Caelan sigh slightly.
“You alright?” she asked him quietly.
“Yeah, I'm fine. He's sleeping now.”
“Good. How is he?”
“I think he's okay. He's just worried about everything that's going on. There was something he wanted to give me, but then he said it didn't matter.”
“Do you know what it is?”
“No, and I've not got a clue.”
Beth opened her bag and pulled out some pyjamas and some clean underwear, slipping it on under the towel.
“I'm sure everything will be alright,” she tried to reassure him.
“I hope so.”
