Beth nodded and sat back, keeping an eye on Zeke. He hadn't really moved since before she'd gone to sleep it seemed like. He really did seem to be too engrossed in his own thoughts to listen or even notice them.
Caelan turned back to the window but Beth didn't want to look out at the few vehicles they passed. She tried to close her eyes to sleep again but couldn't get comfortable, and wasn't tired anymore. She looked at her bag on the seat beside her. She'd brought her phone, hadn't she? And her headphones always lived in her bag.
She rooted around in there and pulled both of them out, triumphant. She'd stolen some of Zeke's music and put it on her phone, so she could listen to it
She plugged the earphones in and pushed them into her ears before pressing shuffle on the music. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day started playing and she smiled before closing her eyes, leaning back and relaxing.
She opened her eyes again when she was being prodded by Caelan.
“Hey, we're stopping for fuel. You need the toilet or anything?” he asked her.
“I'm kind of hungry to be honest,” she admitted, turning off her music and wrapping her earphones around her phone.
“Quite. Enough to have a proper meal.”
“Me too, we'll go in and Zeke can join us.”
She nodded and got out, stretching her aching limbs.
“Where are we?” she asked, looking over at Zeke. He didn't answer.
“He's still thinking. We're in Ecclefechan.”
“Yeah. We're about an hour and a half away from Glasgow.”
Caelan went over to Zeke and touched his arm gently, making him jump about half a foot in the air.
“Sorry, I needed to get your attention. Beth and I are going to get something to eat. Come and find us when you're finished?”
“Yeah, sure,” Zeke murmured.
Caelan looked at him for a few seconds before kissing him, stroking his cheek.
“Faggots!” someone shouted from across the fuel station.
Caelan simply held up his middle finger in that general direction. Beth stifled a laugh.
“We'll see you in a bit,” he said as he pulled back. “Do you want anything?”
“I'm alright,” Zeke shook his head.
Beth walked with Caelan to the services building. Inside, there was a restaurant, a coffee shop, a newsagents, a gambling area and some toilets. They headed straight to the restaurant, which only had one person manning it when they got there.
After looking at the menu, they both got fish and chips. Caelan paid from a small roll of notes in his pocket. They took their number and went to find a table. It wasn't hard really; there was only a elderly couple and a family with two little girls, both of whom were asleep.
It was only a minute or so later that Zeke walked in, his eyes scanning the place as he walked over. He was paranoid, Beth realised.
